I have a Massy Ferguson 265 that when cutting w/the bush hog the PTO slows down & even stops when you get in thicker weeds. I am sure that it must have a wet clutch that in turn must be slipping causing this problem. Will the tractor have to be split in 1/2 to repair this problem or can I fix this another way?
My brother ran the unit with a leaking axle seal and ran it low on fluid causing the problem as far as I know. Also what type hydraulic fluid do I use in the transmisson? We have been using J.D.
303 or the equivalent to this type fluid. Thanks for any help you can be in these matters, Clary McGee

Is it live or independent pto. If it is live you probably have a worn pto clutch that is slipping. Must split tractor a rather straight forward repair. If it is an independent pto it is probably the wet clutch pack and is part of hydralic system, much more detailed and expensive repair. I have repaired both on my MF,s over the years.

With live pto you must use clutch petal to engage or you clash gears. With independent you engage and disengage with out using clutch, ie independent of tramission clutch, has its own hydralic system clutch. 265s use MF Permatran fluid or equivalent.

Mark G. - Thanks for the information, My 265 has a independent PTO because the PTO is ingauged & disingauged w/o having to depress the clutch pedal. Also do the normal manuals found on this web site tell & show how to make this sort of repair on my PTO and if not where can I find the needed info. to make the repair? I plan to do this job myself if possible. I have all of the needed tools because I worked on diesel trucks for 21 yrs. Thanks again, Clary McGee

Don't buy off-brand manuals - been there done that. Get 3 real MF manuals: Operator, Repair, and Parts. Yes, you do need all 3 of them. The parts manual will be very helpful in showing the ultimate detail of exploded views. Consider the cost part of your tractor cost. Best money you ever spent.
