I have a MF 202 loader with the Z134 Continental gas engine. My manual says it has ~6.6:1 compression. It never runs hot and I am in need of more power to work with the loader and 5' box blade, so I want to find horsepower. I am also considering changing to a K&N air filter, electronic Pertronix ignition, and checking/rebuilding the govenor.
Thanks,Shane

Increasing the compression ratio will run the cylinder head pressure and temps up and increase the loads on the parts. Clean up the intake and exhaust side of things and consider a rebore. Those things will get more air through the engine and increase the power without increasing the temperatures or pressures with a minor change in the loads.

Do like the hot rodders do. If you're ambitious enough, you could have the intake and exhaust manifolds opened up a bit. There is a product called "Extrude Hone", it's a flexible thing like a big fat sausage with a cutting surface on it. You would pull it through the manifold passages and it would smooth the surface and open it up some. Then you could have the head ported and have the ports matched to the manifold. If you're taking the engine apart, you could install flat top pistons (the originals are dished) for more compression and new sleeves with a bigger bore, some makers call them "super-power kits". If you feel like being crazy, you could look up "dirt cheap superchargers". This guy uses old air pumps off big V8 engines to blow air past all restrictions into smaller engines. Gang 2 or 3 up for yours and get a boost, but be careful not to blow it up.

Just milling the head isn't going to make any difference. Now if you would have major head work done then it starts to show. As far as the Petronix ignition,DO IT!!! Even if it doesn't give you much of a boost you won't kick your self for doing it. You really can't do anything to the gov.to improve power unless you over ride it/block it out. For a working tractor I wouldn't recomend that. They put a gov. on there for a reason. If you want more power you may want to look into a bigger tractor before you start taking yours apart. It maybe less stressfull or less expensive in the long run. Hope this helps.

I've heard that some minor porting/polishing of the head & manifold will pick you up a few ponies
