Got my Dad's 1979 245 Diesel MF. low hours, but trunnion that carries axle pivot kingpin has bad wear... One guy I know had his break in the field, nosediving him. Has anyone ever bored & bushed one of these, or is it safer to replace entire casting ?? Cost is about 900 for part, I am told. Thanks

I replaced one about two years ago and it ran me about $350, new, not MF. It worked fine. The old one broke but it had 3800+ hours of bad road. I did replace the bushings ~$45 for the set from an MF dealer. Check yours carefully for cracks on top and bottom, maybe you can get by with the bushings only. $900 must be the dealer price. Just wait 'til you have to replace the steering cylinder...Ouch!

I bought mine new from Carl Mitchell Implement in Central City, Ky, (800) 467-8907. It was shipped from a warehouse in Alabama. There were two sizes, one with a larger pin, they sent the wrong one but were more than helpful in getting the right one. It IS heavy, the UPS man had his hands full. Call around, you may find a better deal. Good luck with it! Definitely a two man job to swap it out.

Thanks to CH & Tom for advice on MF245. CH, do you sell the manual for this tractor? If you do, I would be interested in buying one, just email me. Thanks again

Tom's message got me thinking. He's right on two points.

1. Get the manuals

2. If its the bolster that supports the front axel, there are two bushings. Massey part number 660 457 M2. The part number for the pin is 544 438 M1.

I've got the manuals.

Charlie

Before you spend large dollars on replacement, I recommend you get real MF Repair Manual and Parts Manual, and Operator Manual if you don't already have them. My MF 690 has replaceable bushing on this pivot. You need the manuals anyway and the exploded views will show you what can be repaired. Good luck.

If your talkin bout the bolster that bolts to the engine and carries the axle, and your not going to carry any weight and your not gonna run fast over big ruts, bush it. If your gonna use it as a tractor and don't want to maybe get hurt, replace it. Just my opinion.
Charlie.

PS: I learned not to use duct tape and bailing wire to repair everything a long time ago.
