Massey Ferguson 1040 Info Please !

I have been looking at a MF 1040 4x4 that is for sale with a front loader and 3 pt hitch. The guy says its a 1987 but I heard they only made that model until 1986. The tractor appears to be in pretty good shape other than a little rust. Rear tires are good and fronts kind of warn. Hour meter reads 1300 hrs. Asking price is $7000 here in the northeast. Wondering if anyone has info on this machine or what they think of it. Im used to working on old Farmalls and really dont know anything about this machine. Any help appreciated.

I don't know anything about that particular model, but I have a 1976 MF 1135 that has been a good tractor so far. That is my only real experience with Massey. Other people I know who use them really like them. About all I can tell you.

MF 1040 4WD 1984-1986. Retail price for an '86 is $6132 and est loan value is $4047. This would be in average condition and with average hours. The loader could add a $1000 or so I guess, so he may not be bad out of line. Source of info is the 2002 edition of Hotline Farm Equipment Guide.

Quote the #'s that I gave you and tell him those are year old prices, I would offer $6000 for it and have cash on hand. And I wouldn't budge a bit. If he really wants to sell it, he should take it.
