I am looking to replace my 1957 Ford 800 (50HP gas) and wanted a little advice. We rented an MF 255 (4 cyl perkins, 8spd trans) for three years and loved it. It is on the big side of what we need. My question is what models/features should I be looking for and looking to avoid? I will be using it on a horse farm to haul round bales, bush hog and plow snow (live in Canada eh!). Saw a nice 135 for sale, but it was gas, I am going to buy a diesel. The 135 looked a good size though.

Thanks in advance.

A MF175 or 165 diesel will give you all the power you need and then some...but it will be a bit bigger than your 50hp Ford. The MF 175 that our family has is a great tractor and has lasted without major repair since 1975. It grades driveways and drags trees and mows like a trooper....with power to spare. Easy to operate...Great 3-point set up with real good hydraulics...and Easy on fuel too!

My preferences would be a 35, 135, 50 and 65. I am familiar with these. Others I like are the 150 and 165, though I see more of the others in my neck of the woods. I prefer the diesel. Those Perkins diesels are easy to start and easy on fuel. Dual clutch is a must and while multipower is nice, it is more expensive to repair. Power steering is good too.

But.....

If you'd like something a bit newer, you might consider a new MF 231S. These tractors sell in the range of $12 - $14K and appear to me to be a MF 135 with 200 series sheet metal.

Good luck,
Bill

If you are wanting to replace the ford 800 the MF 135 is a great size tractor, approx 38-40 hp hi/lo transmission, pwr steering, live PTO & etc. The MF 135 is the about the same as the 3000 Ford dsl in size, HP, weight & options both tractors are both very good for what you have specified. Depending on what years & modles you are looking for Massey has a 230, 235 & 245 which are newer & similar versions of the MF 135. (230 aprx 34 hp, 235 aprx 40 hp, 245 aprx 45hp) There are also MF 50 and MF 65 which are alittle older than the 135. The MF 50 is aprx same tractor, the 65 is a little larger 45 hp.

Hard to beat a MF 255. I own a 255 and an MF 65, and both are diesels. Many times the larger tractors are cheaper than the smaller ones. Best of the small ones are the MF 35 diesel (make sure it has the Perkins 3 cyl diesel, not the early 4 cyl, which is hard to start), MF 135 and MF 245. The 235 is an earlier version of the 245 and had a troublesome steering system. I would avoid multi-power, as when it breaks you're out some bucks. That's where the 245 is nice, it has an 8 X 2 trans and the two extra gears help. I would also avoid the 231, which is made in Poland. The British, Canadian and American-made MF's are much better tractors than the Polish, Turkish, French and Brazilian-made models. From what I've been told, all Perkins engines are made in the UK, but transmissions, final drives, steering, brakes, hydraulics, etc., come from all over. Avoid the third-world stuff, the quality isn't as good. If you opt for a 255, you want the 8 X 2 trans, independent PTO (single stage clutch), wet brakes (at the rear of the tractor, look for notches on the edge of a spacer just inside of the axle housings), and the A4236 engine (starter on left, exhaust on right). Good Luck!

The MF135 gas may would be easier to start in severe cold weather. Should be cheaper than one with the Perkins diesel.
