A 44 does not have two shift ranges. The successor to the 44, the 444, does. The 44 has a five speed transmission, the other shifter gate should be 4 and 5. The overall ratios (including the master gears) are: 1st 82.4 2nd 59.1 3rd 47.3 4th 33.8 5th 16.9 Rev. 72.9This is based on the 1350 rated engine RPM, 12 x 38 row crop tires (178" rolling circum.), and the rated speeds of 2.76, 3.85, 4.81, 6.74, 13.48 and 3.12 MPH for 1st through 5th & reverse gears. As the gear multiplication & torque is reduced with gear ratio, it makes sense that your tractor would load down. Kindly post your tractor's serial number (located on a plate riveted to the frame on the left side, or stamped into the top of the transmission case between the shift cover & the gear cover), and this will further identify the model. If it is a 44 RC, then the high/low range must be aftermarket. Is the PTO mounted high on the transmission case, if so it is a 44. If it is mounted low, with a three-point hitch, then it is a 444.
