The 2 stage clutch on a 85 MF has a hydralic dump valve to stop the pto, this valve can leak or be out of adjustment causing low pressure in this circuit. I belive it takes a split job to get at it, and also the relife valve. I-T manual has a good check-out of the system. Our Local MF dealer had the pump in stock
(checked just for laughs), as mentioned it is rather costly,a few bucks shy of $1000. Nolt's, in Newville Pa. is a good source of MF salavage parts. Good Luck

i recently rebuilt my mf super 90 power steering
pump. it was a cessna 15602. i rebushed three
bushing for the shafts & new seal kit. it worked
aok (1650 psi ) dead headed. the i & t service
manual for mf 85, 88 & 90 has a good diagnostic
section. if your gears & housing are not worn then that is all that is needed.

if i recondition a pump for $ 245 would you be interested ? txs -- jim

the only pumps that are interchangable with your tractor are the 85-88-90 models, unfortunatly in my 25 years of tractor salvage i think we may have actually had maybe 1 or 2 pumps that were any good at all. to my knowledge NO ONE makes a aftermarket pump or repair kit, also i have been told that massey actually has a price on a new pump, but after you get up, from knocked on your a*s from the high cost, i have been told they still can't supply pump.
we did salvage a mf 90 years ago that had a line plumbed from the 3pt piston pump and drilled and tapped into the outside on the p.s. pump housing with an in line valve, don't know how they did it but it sure did work good.
i don't thick you'll have to much luck, sorry to say.

The 65 and the 85 do not use the same pumps. The 85 parts are a little harder to find. I farm with an 85 and super 90.

Oops, also; Check your clutch.
Ours did this little thing with the PTO and the problem was actually in the clutch.
It has a 2 stage clutch and your 85 may be the same. We had the clutches replaced, problem solved.
We paid a mechanic to do this and it cost us about $550. parts & labor. If you can do the labor you may save some of this. The parts are readily available.

We tried to order one from Yesterday's but they did not have a match.

We got our new pump (for our 59 model MF 65 Gas) from A&I Products Phone 712-476-5119.
We ordered thru Martins Farm Supply 1-812-427-2622

Big Dean told us of another place, Mac Tractor Parts, INC. Toll Free 1-800-882-4742.

We tried to 'rebuild' our pump and found that it was not fixable. Once the seal is shot the whole thing needs to be replaced.

The time lost and money spent on trying to fix it did not justify the downtime.

We hope one of these sources will be helpful.
