My 285 MF is getting hard to steer. What do I need to look at first?

Might check power steering fluid.

I'm a newbie at this, but in following posts about ps it's been mentioned frequently that a bad seal in the ps pump (at least on the Z-134 engine) can allow ps fluid to leak into crankcase, causing deletion and build up of oil levels in the crankcase

Regards

Checked fluid and is ok but is leaking somewhere. Have had to add some all summer. Don't see any leaks on pump, cylinder, or around steering wheel.

if you have to keep adding oil but only little at a time, it still could be a bad seal in your pump.
also what type of oil are you using, hydr. oil or a.t.f., but if your oil level is o.k. the most common failure on the massey 285 is the pump itself, the only other thing it could be is the steering hand pump on the bottom of the steering column. check with your local salvage or aftermarket supplier since, either or should be able to supply you with a new one, i would not recommend installing a used one since they are such a high wear item, believe me i've been in the salvage business for 25 plus years, used ones usually are already worn out, or on their last legs
