Putting the final touches on the Perkins Diesel re-build. I noticed when I took off the Oil filter canister (not a spin-on type) to put in a new element, there was just a spring at the end of the long bolt. Isn't there supposed to be a washer on this spring to hold the element up? The workshop manual I have doesn't say anything about it.
In advance, thanks for any info.

I think there might be more to it than that, I don't recall. I put an adapter on mine for a spin on filter - much easier. I think I paid between $20 and $30 for it.

BTW, how far did you go with your rebuild and how complex did you find it?

Good luck,
Bill

Bill, re your BTW. All the way.. every nut bolt and screw. First two sleeve's pushed out pretty as you please, the third I had to chisel out.. LOTS of carbon behind it. I'll probably have the same problem if I do this engine again. The new sleeve for that cylinder fell right in with no press.
I'm a little concerned about the rear rope seal though. After installing, it takes lots of torque to turn the crank... that's with a breaker bar on the front pulley nut, not the starting motor.

I have rebuilt two 3.152s and they are straightforward to work on except for getting liners out which fortunately I haven't needed to do. You do have to be careful with cylinder head bolt torques as they can end up with cracks in the block if you tighten head too much. Bolt holes are very close to cylinder walls so there's not much strength.
