I just came back from a sale with a 1954 Massey Harris 44 Special row crop with a wide front end. Also included at the sale was what I believe is a MH "Hitch - All". It was not installed on the tractor. The tractor doesn't seem to have hydraulics, so I will have to add that.
What advice would you give me as to adding hydraulics to this tractor?

saying that it's a 44 special it will have a 277 engine and the hyd.pump should be on the left side of the engine to the front. the 44 special is the best of the 44 line with a heavier drive train then the plane 44. in my eyes the best massey made

What is made heavier in a 44 special drivetrain over the regular 44.

Head for the salvage yard. The overhead valve continentals (201, 208, 260, 277) shared the same hydraulic pump. Not sure about the 382. It is an easy bolt on. As for the plumbing, that takes a bit more work. Hopefully you can find a donor tractor that still has oil in the system. Some of the resorvoirs had a filler neck that was open to the elements after the owner would lose the cap!
If it was the later Hitch-All with the follow-up hydraulics, it is an excellent system. These first came out on the Specials, I believe.

it depends on what you want them to do you could put a crank driven pump up front or a pto pump or even a belt drive pump but I'd go with the crank drive hope this gives you some ideas
