CityBoy: Thanks a bunch for the detailed information. I was thinking what I needed was much the same as a post in the Farmall section on converting from 6 volt to 12, and your article confirms it.

Marlowe, thanks, I think city boy's post clarifies my earlier question to you.

What a LOT of help! Really appreciate it guys...

George H

You're welcome George. Everything I know about my MF35 I learned here.

One additional piece of info on that diode. The diode is a very small cylindrical looking thing (around 1/8th inch diameter, 1/4 inch long) with a solid wire lead coming out of each end. One end has a painted band around it. The band side goes towards the alternator. It can go anywhere in the 16 ga line between #1 and the + side of coil. Just be sure to put the band side towards alternator.

i have delco one wire on all my tractors 6 or 12 and 24 volt. you have to make mounting brackets but thats not hard. 6 tractors 3 crawlers 2 payloaders and no problems with any. cost about 65 bucks to 80 bucks from the guy that makes them for me

Marlowe,

Thanks for the reply. Is the Delco one wire the same alternator as the Delco 10Si referred to in the article on converting 6 volt to 12 volt systems?

Thanks

Yes and no. Single wire is just a 10si with a little bit of extra electronics to make it single wire. I just put on a regular 3-wire 10si yesterday. Three wire is cheaper and isn't any big deal to hook up. 10ga from alternator output post to solenoid where battery attaches. 16ga from #2 terminal to output post -- a short jumper. 16ga from #1 terminal to + side of coil. On the wire going to coil either put a small idiot light or a diode in the line. The diode is available from Radio Shack for 63 cents; it's a 1 amp 50 volt diode, little bitty thing, cheaper than a light and doesn't burn out. Purpose of the lamp or diode is to add resistance to the line to prevent backfeed of current when you turn motor off. Without the lamp or diode the motor will most likely keep running when ignition is turned off. I used the diode. Works like a champ. Rebuilt alternator cost $36. For bracket I found that existing brackets worked fine by using a spacer and a long bolt on the pivot braket and bolting a 2 inch strip of metal to the arm bracket and then bolting the alternator to the strip of metal. This was on a Z134 MF35.

Word of caution. Do not disconnect battery while engine is running. It'll likely fry the alt. Been there, done that. Got a free replacement under warranty. Hehe

One more thing. Ditched the ammeter, which didn't work anyway, and replaced with a voltmeter. Way more useful.
