Is this an F-40?

I am looking at buying a "dead" tractor belonging to a neighbor. A rod made a nice new hole in the block last time he used it. Notice the large dark spot under the starter. The tag on the dash says F-40, and the engine tag Continental Z134. Would this be a Massey-Ferguson, or Harry Ferguson tractor? 1956 or so? Does anyone know where I can find a replacement engine to rebuild?

Thanks for any info

I think this is a late M.F. 50. judging from the clutch pedal and air intake at the front of the hood. It appears that the left side of the grill is missing. The grill of a Ferguson 40 had verticle ribs and the hood was 2 pieces. The part ahead of radiator doesn't open with the rest. On the M.H. 50 & M.F. 50, the grill has horizontal ribs and the hood is 1 piece. As mentioned before, the M.H. 50 hood is concave the full length on both sides. Can you find a serial number tag on it?

Thanks for the reply. The tag says F-40 and the serial number range shows it to be a 56. But as you describe the MF & MH 50s, the hood is one piece, the right side grill has horizontal bars. I am wondering if someone swiped a tag off an F-40, or did some sheet metal swapping. What ever it may be, I sure need a Z134 motor.

That is definately the wrong hood and grill for a Ferg. 40. It could have been changed.

If it says F-40 on the dash, it is a F-40!

When Ferguson and Massey Harris merged, they kept the product identies for a few years, before becoming Massey Ferguson. The MH50 and the F40 are the same machine, except for paint and the hood on the MH50 had a little indentation running down both side top corners.

These are good tractors.

Good luck,
Bill
