Trying to rebuild a pony carburator (1949) and someone has soldiered the idle passage shut, have ordered a rebuild kit, but wondered why it has been soldiered shut? Tractor only runs when choked. Does anyone have experience rebuilding these?

Was the idle screw missing at one time. I suspect guess the carb must of had multiple problems at one time, leaky gaskets, perhaps float adjustment problems.
The Marvel carb is quite common and you can refer to the 8N site which has several very good detailed articles on how to rebuild carbs.
The Marvel were used on Fords, Massey's and John Deere & most likely lots of other makes !
I know a lot of the rebuilt parts gaskets are near Identical.
I have rebuilt several and slowly learned that 1)You should have compressed air to blow all the passages etc after solvent clean-up.
2) You must remove the long Brass tube (awkward need a very thin walled 1/4 " deep socket) as the small holes are always blocked, and air etc will not open these up unless you do.
3) New float check Valve
Anyways all of this & a lot more Idle & Power adjustments are covered in the Ford site articles.
I recently bought a M-H 20 & the carb needed attetion.
I had a rebuit Kit for my 8N and used gaskets etc to rebuilt. Worked fine.
Also 8N site has lots reference tips.
Perhaps this site will become as popular.
Hope this helps
