The other day I was skidding some logs from the trees that Isabel knocked down and I almost choked the old MH down. I pushed the clutch in to shift from 2nd to 1st, and it did not choke down, but the engine apparently kicked back and started running backwards. because it blew all the oil from the air cleaner out of the intake stack.

I stopped the engine, wiped off the hood, replaced the oil in the air cleaner and started it back up and it ran fine. This has happened a couple of times in the 50 years that dad has owned the tractor. It is a 1953 model that dad bought new. The engine was completely rebuilt in 1971, and the tractor has run about 2500 hours since then mainly doing light work.

What would cause a diesel engine to kick and run backwards like this?

Rob Some diesel will run backward if they are lugged down to stop . The load will push motor backward to start motor runing backward you will need to shutoff the fuel or air , to stop tractor motor ! Then you need to check Oil in are cleaner if oil bath type . also for motor oil as that oil may blow out into air cleaner . Detroit 238 was bad for that, if off road at construction site trying backing up dirt hump 238 had little horse power no guts will lugg down quick, stop, load startes motor runing backward the motor will be runing backward real quick . It will pump 8 qt. of oil into air cleaner in 15 sec. yes been there done that and you can not give me a oil leaking 238 . snowey

I've had Mack diesels (old 2 valve and the newer 4 valves) do this also. I think the answer to the question of why do they do it... because they can. Other than the injection timing being off a little diesels can run both ways (in operating principle anyway). I believe Detriot Diesels can be set up to run either way depending on application with only a few changes. However, shut it down as soon as possible, among other things, your oil pump will not pump pressure running backwards!

Yeah! they can. Your pump timing may be a little advanced which would aggravate it.
