Alternator goes berzerk

Was making good progress turning the neglected MF35 into a serviceable tractor -- new battery, new gauges, new radiator cap, new antifreeze, new oil and filter, new alternator (10 SI) -- and then a small problem. Warmed up tractor prior to changing oil. When I turned it off it kept running and voltage level shot up past the gauge. Killed it with the choke. Had alternator tested; it's now dead (low voltage). I had run it before with this alternator and it was fine.

I had messed with the wires to the alternator and may have accidentally switched the sense and field lines. Or put another way I may have jumpered the output post to the field connection (#1) rather than the sense connection (#2). Would this have fried the alternator? And if so then why fry only when I turned ignition off?

If you reversed the connections you may have fried the internal regulator. They're cheap and easy to change. Make sure you watch which holes the insulated screws go in.
