I got the tractor started agian, but with a miss because of fouled plugs. I parked it by the gas tank to put fuel in it and easier acess to the engine to change plugs. I put in new plugs, and it started right away, and while I was getting my earplugs from the house, I left it run. I got on to pull away, and it died. Again, no spark at the coil. It's a new coil. I took off the cap and turned over, and I saw a blue spark at the points. I put the cap back on, turned over with coil wire about 1/8" away from frame, and there wasn't a spark. I replaced the end on the wire by the coil going to the points, as well as the poins the 1st time, with new condenser, cap, rotor, coil,etc... Tomorrow the dealer gets a crack at it.

You sure you're using the correct coil(internla/external resistance)? I'm not being pissy but you did place the distributor end of the coil wire next to ground and not the coil end of the wire, right? Take a plug wire and try it using the same coil wire test. You should also be able to turn the engine so the points are closed and take the cap off, ign. on, put a small screwdriver in the points and open/close them for a test. If the dist. end of the coil wire won't produce a spark but you're getting a good arc at the points every time then it pretty much has to be the coil or wire.

I noticed that you said you replace the end of the wire. Try replacing the whole coil wire. I had this once on a friends car, swapped points, condensor, rotor, but always used the same coil wire, turned out to be the COIL WIRE itself.

If you are geting spark at the points, than your new coil is still good. ( New eletronics will burn out with in the first 6 months or last a life time for the most part) now my guess is, is that the rotor has a crack in it and the spark is grounding to the distibitor shaft instead of the distibitor cap. i had a farmall H hat i bought as a non runing tractor because the guy thought that it was full of junk in the fuel tank and carb. turned out i was not geting any spark beacuse of a cracked rotor. i would check that before sending it to a dealer and geting the shaft for a $6 part kit. i think that fleet farm has the entire tune up kit for $12

The spark at the points is what triggers the coil to fire.... The coil can be bad and still get a spark at the points.

sounds like a bad cap or rotor or some other simple thing if you take it to the shop it will cost you a couple hundred just for about $10 worth of parts and maybe a few bad words believe me I know how it can be I have a little crawler that runs on all but one cylinder because of a bad cap

I figure that because it stoped all together that the rotor has a small hair line crack in it. but the cap could be bad too. good point

the mechanic is making a farm call, and it's a new rotor. I replcaced the end of the wire on the - side of the coil. I can't find a different coil spark wire to try, but I took the #1 wire and pluged into coil, with a spark plug grounded on the frame on the other end, and only saw 1 spark.

New condensor also? The battery should be in good charge of course. The points grounding out or the wire inside the dist. like someone else pointed out sounds like a good candidate. My best guess would be condensor or point gap not right not allowing the coil to build charge.

Another thing to look for is the wire inside the distributor, check to see if the wire is grounded with a bare spot against the side of the distributor.

Hows the ground wire that go's from the coil to that dist? if that wire is not so good than that is a very good canidate for your problem too. i find it dont matter if a part is new or old, they all break some time.

I have an Oliver 77 that likes to eat rotors at time and that is how it stops but a cap can do it also I'd get both If I were you and don't feel bad I'm fighting with a machine that seems to have more fight then I do and its also in the cap/rotor/points area

I'd try another condenser. They'll do that one spark trick. Make sure it's connected in the right place ( movable point to ground).
