I am posting this for a friend who has a M-F 175 I think. His power steering went out and he converted it from the Saginaw to the Char-Lynn system. From what he could determine from a local dealer here everything is hooked up right however, He has rubber hoses instead of steel lines ccoming and going to the pump and he said today that both those and the pump body itself get pretty hot after using the tractor for a while.

The power steering works good and the way it should but he is wondering if the heat is normal. he said he could touch the pump body and it was hot enough to burn him lightly.

Any ideas?

What is the Char-Lynn unit from. Some are closed center and some are open center. Your 175 is open center, if you put a closed center valve on it the releive valve on the steering pump wil be releiving oil all of the time and the oil will get hot.

Ok I 'll see what it came off of. I was thinking he had bought the pump new but who knows. If that is what happened what does he need to look for?Doesthe pump have something on it to tell if it is open or closed?
