Well, here's the story. My dad went out to our 165 one morning, found the battery was dead, and the key was on for some unknown reason. I charged the battery and it turns over fine, but there is no spark now. I pulled the coil wire from the dist. cap and held it a short distance away to check this while cranking. Is it possible the coil or something else burnt up while the ig. was on? What are some possible causes?

If points were closed the battery can discharge to ground burning the points. You could file points but I would replace points and condenser first then check coil if you still have no fire

I replaced the points and condenser, and just because the cap and rotor looked a little sketchy, I also replced them as well. I tried it and nothing happened. I put on the coil from a chev 283 I had and it started, I drove it out the shed and then it died again. I bought a new coil and put it on, but still nothing. Any more ideas???? I'm stumped. And myphed.

Take a test lite or voltmeter and check for voltage at coil postive.I have a 165 perkins gas that has lots of problems not starting.Bad ignition switch, no current to coil. I found a bare wire from the starter switch to coil that is also connected to the carburetor shut off solenoid. Still have hope this will fix years of intermittent no start or missing out.not sure what engine you have.david

I have the Continental. I left the dist. cap off while looking at the manual and and searching the archives. My dad went out and put the cap back on without the dust cap in, and it started, although one of the plugs is now fouled out from being flooded. I put the dust cap back in and had the same problems, so I took it out again and drove it to the fuel tank out in the open so I can work on it a little more tomorrow, take the plugs out and clean them up a bit. Hopefully that fixes everything, I'll just put the dust cap in the box with the old distributor cap and save it for now, the dist cap and rotor were fine, but while I had it apart I figured i'd replace the cap and rotor for good measure. Don't think I mentioned it before, but you were right on the points being burnt, they definately had to be replaced. Thanks for your help.
