I just bought a 50c backhoe and not ever owning one befor I have problems. The backhoe swings from side to side on its own depending on which way the tractor is leaning. Otherwise everything seems to be ok. Does anyone know what the trouble is?? I would be greatful for your help. Ron

i have a machine like yours and had the same problem, someone had replaced the circuit relief "O" rings and used a smaller size, replaced the "O" rings with correct size solved problem. there is a circuit relief for left swing and another for right swing. the circuit reliefs are located on the top of the rotary cylinder. (looks like head of 3/4 or larger bolt). i have pages from service manual covering the rotary clylinder, i do not have a computer scanner to email it to you.

Hi Ron -

We had both your probloms with our 30 (kid brother to the 50). We overcame the sharp operation a bit by using 1000 to 1100 rpm engine speed.

The leak-by was wiper seals in the motor; MF dealer replaced them and the problem stopped.... for six months..... .

We live with it now, and keep out of really tricky areas, or raise the hoe with one stabilizer so the boom coasts to safety rather than into a structure. Lopsided, but better than poking a hole in a wall...

Thanks Jack of NB-- Seems as though everyone has had problems with these motors. I usally keep my working speed around 1000rpm too. I will just learn to have a finer touch on the levers as time goes on. Thats what I've been doing, keeping the tractor level with the outriggers when in use and I have a couple bolts I can stick in the holes at the top of the boom mount(just above the motor) to keep it from swinging into anything as I drive around. They're not to hard to take in and out if the tractor is level enough for you to push the boom back and forth. If the repairs don't hold up, it is probably not worth the time and money to have it repaired. It is only to be used now and then for personal reasons and not for profit. Thanks -- Ron

I have just purchased a MF 50C and need to replace missing part for the stbilizers. The pin that the stabilizders pivot on has "C" clamps that hold the pins in place. The 50C that I bought is missing these "C" clamps. I can't find diagram or part numbers for these. Does any one have a manual or part numbers they can send me>

when it is working right you will have smooth control swing

Its is smooth or slower when I just bearly apply pressure to the control levers. I guess Iam just using to much throw on the levers. I did not expect it to be that fast to react. I had alot of play in the controls when I got it and just by adding a washer here and there I got most of the slop out of the controls. The problem I had with the boom swinging from side to side was there before I eliminated the control lever slop. Ron

I have a MF 40 with 212 hoe same setup as you have. You can switch hoses with one of the other valves to check out that part of the system. If that checks ok then its the swing motor, has seals on a wiper type piston. My ideas.

I forgot, there is a 1" bolt on lower side of swing motor that holds the unit from turning. Mind came out and did what your's is doing.

massey and some ihc and john deere did not use swing rans they used a orbitting motor for the swing and i have never had one apart but have heard they can be a bit-- to work on. but i do know a way to test them. park on the level and raise hoe off the ground chain the bucket to some thing so it can[[[[[ NOT]]]]]] swing. disconnect the hyd. lines at the orbitting motor and plug the fittings at the motor this way you can tell if the motor is leaking . now unchain the hoe and see if you can push it from side to side [[[[[[[BE CAREFUL TO NOT GET IN A SPOT THAT YOU CAN GET PINED ]]]]]]]]] if you can move it then it's in the motor if you can't move it then it's in the control valve. good luck and BE CAREFUL

Thanks Marlowe- for your help and to you to Bob. Great ideas, and yes I did change the shear bolt on bottom of the motor. It had a bunch of play in it. I knew the trouble had to be in the motor or the control valves but I had never thought of doing the tests you mentioned. That would certainly eliminate one or the other. Yes on the safety factor, because this is a major peace of equipment and very heavy. I have alot to learn about the operation too. I did not realize how fast and touchy the boom was to control. its not easy to get a slow , smooth control movement. Thanks again fellows. I really appreciate the time you have taken to help me. Ron

Two things, one is that you might hav air in the hyraulic lines that would be geting compreesed when the bucket is leaning, and two you have a bad seal on the rams. if the seals are bad on the rams, than you would see it leaking and you would have to put in new o-rings in the cyclenders. if it is air in the lines/rams, than it will work its self out with use. not sure if closed center hydraulics will work them selfs out, you might have to loosen a hose just a bit and work the hyraulics to bleed the air out. i have not used a 50c so there might be something that i dont know abought that might be wrong also.

This backhoe does not have ram cylinders for left or right movemont. Some have told me that it is a motorized hydraulic systems. Anyhow it is a round cylinder attached to the boom. Ron

I am not sure now what you mean by round cyclinder if not a single or duel cylinder like on plows discs rakes planters and the list goes on. how does this round cylinder? maybe there is a check or release valve that might have went out too. just guesses there.

Thats all I can tell you. The cylinder turns with the boom and has no rams as does the lift and the extention boom. I know there is a problem and I would guess the samething as you are, but was hoping someone else has experenced the same problem and could assure me of what was causing the trouble and what repairs would be necessary.
