I have a '52 Harry Fergusen TO30 with a Marvel Schebler carb. Just lately, I have had to start it (every time, even after it is warm)with the choke on. It runs ok for a short time, starts running rough, idles down and stops. Then I have to put on the choke, it starts back up, and the same thing happens. Also, it conks out when put under a load. I have monkeyed with the spring loaded thumb screw on the front of the carb, turned the slotted screw in and out (in the center of the carb) and also messed with the butterfly screw on the back of the carb which is tied into the throttle linkage. Needless to say, I have it all screwed up now. Where should I set each of the screws to get back to the beginning and what do you suggest I do get my tractor back to running right. I got grass to bushhog. Help.

Don.....both adjustment screws need to start at 1 turn out.....lightly turn them in till they seat and then out 1 turn....The screw closest to the front on the tractor is the power adjustment...with engine running at governor speed under a load (I leave my mower attached and in gear....please think saftey...get someone to sit on tractor and operate throttle while you adjust it) turn it clockwise until it looses power then back out till it runs smooth...a little richer adjustment may be needed to improve acceleration..... The small screw is the idle adjustment...with the engine warmed up turn it all the way in then back out till it runs smoothly..... The other screw you mentioned is the linkage adjustment just hold the throttle linkage closed then turn screw till it touches the stop....it should be ok there..
Don't forget to check your air cleaner and all the filters or screens.....also check for vaccum leaks at manifold ....if you still have problems you may need to rebuild it....napa has the kits and they have good instructions and they are easy to rebuild...
I hope this helps you if you have any problems post back and I'll scan the adjustment procedures and email them to you...
hope you have a nice day...
best wishes
