I have a MF35D that blows a large amount of oil out the dipstick hole. Does this mean bad rings or cylinders? The engine was rebuilt about 1 1/2 years ago. It also smokes very badly upon startup but clears up after about a minute. Thanks.

Ouch! Had the same problem. Blowing out the dip-stick, Blow-by pipe, and front seal. Popped the head, and all looked well.. Sleeves clean and unscored, valves worn but not burned. Decided to open the bottom end. When I was pushing the pistons out (on cyl's 1 & 2), dozens of pieces come out with 'em. Rings and piston lands had shattered. Gentlemen, throw away the starting fluid bottle!!!

Oil blowing out of your dip stick tube is caused by crank case pressure. Some thing is leaking clyinder pressure into the crank case and it has no where to go but out the dip stick. When rebuilt before did you do heads and pistons. If you did only heads the extra force caused by good valves has caused your weak rings to blow out. Not knowing what you did on first rebuild and if it is gas or diesel this is much as I can help.

I hope I am wrong, but my 35 diesel had the same problem and I had to overhaul mine. Pistons, sleeves, and rings. Runs great now. If you have used ether or gasoline to get it running, that is a possible cause. I am sure there are plenty of others. Good luck, C. T.
