I need some advice and pros/cons.
I have a 1975 MF255D without remotes. It was purchased in 1976 and it is a great chore tractor. I would like a loader but had felt the tractor might be too small. A friend and I run about 70 cows and we handle about 150 to 200 5X5 or 5X6 round bales each year. Our farms and pastures are spread about 2.5 or 3 miles apart so we do haul hay on the farm-to-market road some. As I said earlier I am concerned that my tractor would'nt handle these bales well with a loader to load and move, not transport. Do I want to spend about $1,000 to add hydralics and up to $2,000 for a used loader or would I be better served to look for a larger tractor (MF or otherwise) with a loader in the range of $5,000 to $7,000. I really don't won't a second tractor to maintain but at times the extra tractor would be handy. I would really like to hear from folks with a loader on MF65, 165, 255, 265 or 275. I had thought my tractor might be too light and considered a 275 but while surfing the net I noticed that the front spindles where basically the same for the 255 thru 275. Opinions please.

Thanks, guys this is the kind of info I needed. I have been looking for a used MF236 or a used Bush Hog 2425/2426QT loader with no luck but I plan to be patient and do it right.

The 255 IS a good loader tractor. When it comes to lifting round bales, just make sure you have enough wieght on the rear of the tractor. A heavy impliment, another round bale on a spear, or a bunch of wieghts and fluid in the tires. From my experience, it's more of an issue of the LOADER, than the tractor. Get a good one. Most any one will lift A round bale. It's what happens after 5000 of them. Some loaders just won't hold up to the torture. I have an Allied loader for my 2440, and a Deere loader for my 4020. As much of a Deere fanatic as I am, I still like the Allied loader more. Hope this helps, John

Just bought a 255 today. Looking to add a loader. What brands of loaders fit this, and what is the best way to find one? It already has the secondary controls and remote fittings, so I am sure the pump is already installed and it is ready to go. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 255 with a 2500 QT Bush Hog front end loader. I've loaded large round bales on my wagons for several years. Never had a problem, Used a bucket spike from TSC.

Kypete,

Bush Hog indicates that the 2425/2426QT is what fits the 255. Did you put the 2500 on your tractor yourself or did it come on the tractor? Was the mounting hardware very hard to adjust? I would consider a different series but I am unsure just how difficult it would be to adapt and if the adaption would negatively impact the operation or ease of removal/remounting of the loader for the few occasions that I might want it off the tractor?

That should have been 2400 QT. Hit the wrong key.It was installed be MF dealer when I purchased the tractor. Very easy to remove or put back on the tractor on level ground.

I was under the impression that the 255 was a good loader tractor. My info shows the weight at 5970 pounds. I have a 255 but no loader. The tractor had a loader with the prior owner. After watching a fellow with a loader on a smaller JD work this week loading the hay on my place, he had no problems at all with a lighter tractor.

A trick he used was to pick up a bale on the 3 point spear and then load with the loader spear. He was loading 15 bales going 2 high on a trailer and a flat bed ton truck. And he wasn't taking it easy. The first thing he did when he hit the field was get one on the back.
