44 Row Crop Wide Front Question

I would like to pull the axle tube out of the pedestal in order to replace the bushings & repair the poor quality welding done on the tube in the past. I drove out the locking pin, but the pivot shaft is stuck solidly in the pedestal. I tried my good Snap-on puller on it, but it wouldn't budge. Is there a specific procedure for doing this, or is it just tight? Or do I have to pull the pedestal off and press the pivot pin out? Thanks in advance.

Perhaps one of the tube bushings is worn through,
thus, the pivot pin has been wearing on the steel of the tube. A groove, or burr in the pin may
be what is preventing movement. Have you tried going the opposite direction? These pins pick up
some rust, over the decades, but should pass the
old bushings, without a problem. I was able to match all the bushings, except the two large ones,
for the 7 tooth sector gear. Fill the ovaled wedge holes, then weld 1/4" squares (drilled), on
the tube. MH had updated in '55 to collars, but
the squares are easier to make, give the worn
wedges more surface contact, to tighten up the
front axle assembly. Good luck.

I'll try taking the weight of the tube off the pin and then tapping it back to the rear of the tractor (the tractor is blocked up). I can see that the forward bushing is worn badly. Replacement bushings will be no problem, and I was lucky as my sector gear bushings were like new. For the holes, I like your idea of reinforcements. However, I think I'll use circular sections of 4" Schedule 40 pipe. 4" S40 has an OD of 4.5" and an ID of just over 4" (4.026", I think) to fit nicely over the 4" OD axle tube. My drill press has enough travel to drill through both sides of the axle tube, so I'll do that for perfect alignment of the holes. I got the left hand extension out after carefully grinding off the weld. It was actually easier than I expected as the weld had very poor fusion. The axle brace is another nightmare but I'll tackle that after fixing the axle.
