I just purchased a 1961 MF 35 Gas Tractor. The governor assembly has been replaced but appears to not be acting properly. The carbeurator has been replaced also. The tractor sometimes will
shut down on an incline at low engine speed. Can anyone give me some insight on the necessary repairs and the amount of expense? Can this be done by myself? I am very mechanically inclined with autos,Small power equipment etc.

Phil, your engine should be the Z134, but to double check there will be a serial# tag on the block with that info.

Hi Philip

If your gas tank is over 1/2 full
because if gas level is very low and tractor
front is inclined the gas does not reach the
tube in the tank..especially if the shutoff
valve has a reserve system.

it may be the carburetor float misadjusted
or dragging on inner gas chamber walls
(occurs sometimes in Zenith carbs)
causing gas level in carb to be too low.

Hope it helps

Phil, If you have the Z134 continental engine the governor adjustment instructions in the factory manual may not work. See Big Dean's page for the adjustment proceedure that worked for me.

Phil,
I'd want to check out all carb, throttle, and external governor linkage adjustments before tearing into the internal governor. None of the above are that tough, just too much to go into via posting-get an operators and a shop manual. Sounds like I'd look at the air idle adj. on the carb and the bumper spring adjusting screw on the front timing gear cover (Should be all the way out) first. If you do have to go inside, it's not that bad. Tear off the front end, pull the timing gear cover and you're there. Manuals are necessary for that also as you'll need to check various clearances for wear in timing cover components. Cost won't be too bad, about $55.00 for the governor assembly and $10-15.00 for a new front cover gasket. If you do a new governor assy., make sure the shafted plate that slides in & out of the hole in the end of the camshaft does so smoothly: Just had an aftermarket one with a slight taper that seized. New one from AGCO for $7.00 had a slight (Almost imperceptable)burr that would have caused the same thing if we hadn't caught it. Plate is not supposed to spin, just move in and out as acted upon by flyweight ball bearings. Good luck.
