I have a FE-35 4 cyl dsl with a choke lever (C). I have been told that I should only use this lever (pull it all the way out) to stop the engine, and then push it back in ready for starting next time. On the starting instructions panel riveted onto the cowling next to the keyhole it says to pull the lever out to the halfway position for cold starting. I am now unsure as to how I should use this choke lever - any help appreciated as always.

Hello, Craig -

That left knob should be on a rod which goes forward to the top of the injector pump, just behind the oil filler cap. This turns the fuel on and off to run/stop the tractor. The control should be either fully in (forward) to run, or fully out (and preferably engaged in the stop slot on the retaining bracket) for positive shut-down.

The "C" probably means it has a replacement knob on it, and is not significant.

I haven't seen the placard you refer to about half position for start. I'd be guessing that the tractor had a pull switch to start at one time, with the half position controlling the preheater or glow plugs.

This might have been a factory configuration for your part of the world. Massey did that at times - some of my parts books detail South Africa, Carolina Dept of Highways, and Texas specifics. But my 35 books all show the rotating starting switch, which have the detent position to the left for preheat, and full left or right to start.

Anyway - you don't have a choke to worry about!

Hope this helps.

And thank you for the scenic NZ website - haven't explored it fully, but it sure has some impressive scenery!

Later -

Jack
