Have I sinned?

I removed the non-working, disconnected AMP meter from my MF35 and replaced with a voltmeter rather than another AMP meter. Voltmeter seems like a more informative gauge than an AMP meter. Tells me battery volts with engine off --- a little over 13, and also tells me alternator is working because volts increase to about 14.5 when engine is running. Very reassuring to see that needle jump to life when the ignition is turned on.

I got a 0-4000 Tachometer from J. C. Whitney for about sixty dollars a couple of years ago. It fits the large hole just fine. I also installed a fuel guage from them. You will skin a knuckle but it is well worth the trouble. Now I have tach, fuel, oil, temp, and like you a volt meter. I guess I really sinned.

To me, that sounds like a good trade. Where did you find the voltmeter, and what is the meter voltage range?

Any 2 inch diameter gauge will work. They are available from auto parts stores and tractor parts stores. The volt range is something like 8 to 18. Very easy to hook up, postive wire to ignition switch and ground wire to any metal. Most difficult part of all is getting up under the MF35 dash to tighten the mounting nuts, space is tight. Thus far, I've replaced water temp, oil pressure, and voltage.

Now trying to figure out something to use for a tach. The tractor did not come with a tach. Factory tachs are cable driven off the generator, but the tractor now has a Delco 10-SI alternator. Datcon (www.datcon.com) makes a decent looking 0-3,000 rpm tach/hourmeter combination that might work for about $90, or I can go cheap with a TinyTach for about $40 (www.tinytach.com). Anyone have any thoughts on this issue?

GaryF,

Do you have an electric tach on your tractor? If so what kind is it?

Good plan. The gauge being sold by Denny's looks like a Datcon gauge -- note the small symbol underneath the needle post and then compare to pic of gauge on Datcon's site. I guess Denny's has custom dial faces made up.

Thanks GaryF. Another option to consider when I decide to do something. You have one of these installed in a MF35? I ask because space under dash is limited and I see that the mounting cup looks rather deep.

I replaced the generator on my SUPER 90 with an alternator and adapted the tach drive to operate from the rear of the alternator. I used the pulley from the generator to maintain proper rpm.

I had to machine a donut of aluminum to fit over the rear bearing of the alternator. I attached the tach drive gear box to this donut. I drilled and tapped the alternator armature to accept the tach drive gear. It is working well.

Sounds like a great solution. Would be great to fit the proper tach to the tractor, but I have no machining skills, no tach, no cable, no drive adapter, and I don't know that the pulley on the alternator is the original. I'm envious.

Later model MFs used an alternator with a tach cable adaptor. My MF 175D has one. It is an older GM with the external regulator. I have seen these alternators advertised in a catalog, but I don't remember which one. MF dealer may have just the adaptors.
