i put synthenic gear oil in mh 44 transmission box after i put new seals on both sides where the brake drums are at...no leak, now one year later until last week, i got bad leak coming out of the housing axle where the shaft is, where the tires mounted on it.. it is coming out pretty good.. does that housing axle have seals same as brake drum shafts with seals? the tractor is sitting very leveled.. its coming out and leaking all over the rim and tire..how do you fix this leak? also are you supposed to use sae 30 motor oil only for that mh 44 4 clyinder engine? not sae 10-30, just sae 30?? thanks again shannon

sorry, the motor oil is for the engine only... no waaay i would put motor oil in that transmission box! i got the synthenic gear oil from work at no cost, real good stuff... so i just have to replace the old seals on the housing axle both sides.. shouldnt be too hard to do that? so the motor oil for the engine, i should be using sae 30 motor oil only, not sae 10-30, just 30 right? thanks for the feedback...

Multi-weight oil is fine in the motor.

Lots of varying opinions on lubricant questions. Mine is that you're plenty okay with using a good multi-weight oil in the engine ... 15-40 comes to mind and is commonly available. If you have a diesel engine then be sure to use an oil specified for diesel use. Multi-weight, detergent motor oils are a technological improvement that was not available when my tractor was built. More important than the single-weight vs. multi-weight issue is regularly changing oil and filter and maintaining proper oil level.

i heard its because of the thinning and thickness of the motor oil which should go just sae 30 only? cuz of the mechanical that was made 50 years ago which is not as perfect as mechanical made by computerized..

thanks shannon

The original oil specifications which called for single weight oils also called for lighter weight oils when outside temps were lower. So in effect prior to multi-weight oils being available the tractor manufacturers were recommending that you achieve the effects of multi-weight oils by changing to different single weights throughout the year. Technology seems to have improved upon what the manufacturers were already recommending.

I will add this though. Single weights have much greater stability than multi-weights and are less subject to thermal breakdown. However, regular oil and filter changes, which should always be done regardless of what oil is used, pretty much eliminate multi-weight stability concerns.

The axle seals are quite prone to leakage on that series Massey. Especially if parked on a side hill. They should be available at local parts store. They were about 5 years ago anyway.

I'm not sure I understand the oil question. I use automotive type rear-end lube in the housing. Whether synthetic or not you want to be using gear lube. Not a motor oil. The gear lube has additives for the extreme pressures found at the pinion gears.
