I have a 44 Massey with 4 1/16" M&W Pistons in it. However I have only 52 HP at stock RPM's. I have Money, Where do I spend it to get 65 HP? I have 2 extra 44 heads to play with. Would a 444 head be better? Are the the same? It appears that lack of air flow is the major problem with these engines. What I want to do is get the most Horsepower I can with the pistons that are in it.

Thanks for your help.

A 444(277) head will not give you any more compression. A 44 head can be milled up to 200 thousands. A lot of work can be done to a 44 head to help increase hp. I would not worry about tearing up a 44 rearend they will handle alot more than 52 hp,say 100+.

Plain a head a 100 thousandths, mill off the end of the valve guide that protrudes into the intake and exhaust chambers (under the valves) and port and polish it. Then get a carb off a 1650 oliver (marvel sherbler). A LP manifold also has no heat exchanger and might be good for 5HP.

Another 'puller' question? The M&W's should have given you 54 HP. The Triple 4 head had higher
tolerance for increased compression. Since you mention extra heads & money, you could take one
head to a auto performance shop, get it bored &
polished. The cam can be modified. Once assembled,
you should have some yet unknown added HP. If you
like the engine HP, spend more: get a 44 Special
direct drive transmission case, S/N 55113 & up.
Make sure it has gear oil, these have heavier
pinion bearings, your added engine stress will not
tear out a ring gear, etc. Remember, you stated 'money'. Building the engine, forgetting the drive
train, only gets you snapped gear teeth. What is
the S/N of your 44? Probably get the gear case in
a week, if you are serious.
