I have a chance to buy one of these old balers but have never used one or have been around anyone who has, what can you tell me about it, the good and the bad....

Thanks

Jim

I am a JD man but have never had a JD baler. I have an old MF 10 baler (I can see no difference in it and a 12). It is wonderful. I paid $155 for it many years ago and it looks like it has never been in a shed. I have made thousands of bales with it and it seldom misses a bale. I made over 500 very solid straw bales with it this year.

With any baler you have to tweak the knotters once in a while. I had trouble this year but it had old twine in it. When the old twine was gone and I bought new it never mistied or broke a bale.

We've been runnning a 12 for over 20 years now, and it works great!!! We never even touched the knife, and still makes clean cut, straight, and VERY tight bales. We can constantly make 70lb bales without a problem. Only misses a bale maybe 1 a day, all day. Every now and then the knotters may get a little touchy, but it's usually the twine(cheap crap left from last year). We love our #12 and it works better than any other machine I've seen, new or used, red or green.

i had IH(junk), NH(OK) , then i got a no 12 --baled 5000 bales a year for 25 years - never spent one dime on it and only missed about 1 bale/1000-only complaint is it would not make a real tight bale ..... ....i've since had a couple NH and now have a JD (i like the solid bale -but DO NOT like the baler!)

i cant get a tight bale with mine unless i run at night. if i had a salt app than i would do all my baleing at night till i jammed her up to tight.

I am under the same impression as Steven H. Run like you are a track star. At the dealership I work at one guy continues to bring his MF 12 in for repairs. I think he could have bought a new baler with the amount of money he has poured into this bottomless pit of a baler. I have a 224T JD baler, and I did spend the money to put new plunger bearings and knives in it, but it has only missed one bale this entire year. I don't bale that many square bales, but this baler has some years on me. But run, run far away from MF hay equipment. Stick to the perkins motor and nothing else.

Juston, I disagree. I am not impressed with Perkins engines. My friend has one in a White tractor. I am a JD man and have never been around much MF stuff. My first experience was a 92 Combine and I hated it. Now I have a 10 baler and it is outstanding. They are so simple with such few moving parts I don't know how anyone could spend much money on one. I also have a MF 260 Forage Harvester. It is the best cutter I have ever been around.

I have a #9 and like it very well. The only thing not liked is the noise packing fingers makes over augar feed system It also likes heavy windrows and low RPM's

I had one the plunger knife was broke on it. So it wouldn,t make a good bale. Tried to bale bromegrass with it didn,t work to good. Then baled praire grass worked good never miss a bale. In brome it won,t tie a bale. I think if it had the plunger fixed it would be a good baler. I also had trouble keeping twine on bales as i picked them up. I,m sure they are a good baler but i wouldn,t have another one. Just my thoughts about it.

around here a mf baler is the one that sets the standard for all the others . I would think that a $400.00 baler would be about used up. I have owned several MF balers #12 and 120 are the same basic balers sheet metal a little diff. 124 and 128 are as good as it gets , remember no baler is any better than the service and care you give it just my thoughts ,Buford
