The numbers are all greyed on these half-century
old engines, then who supplied the over haul kit.
Even the Nebraska Tests get disputed, when an old
tractor was rated at 'Belt' HP, verses PTO. The
number that sticks on an H260, w/M&W pistons is 54
HP. Was it BELT or PTO, no M&W Gear to ask. As far
as the Diesel torque, this cleans the clock on a
Gasser, unless the injector pump is not timed correctly(common). The pump must be timed to the
engine, not on a bench. H277's usually run 5 or more HP over H260's.

At correct timing, an H260 would have about four
more HP than an HD260, same vintage. Torque was
the factor, the '48 44D RC was a beast to deal with for any competitive color. This lugging power, under load, exceeded HP importance, it just chugged on.
The J382 in the 55/555 was about 68HP belt. An
unfinished tractor, powerful, but only 4 speed,
no live power, no disc brakes, no Hitch-All. It
was primarily used pulling a gang(trailer) plow.
They became obsolete quickly, due to limited use.
Only about 3800 555's built. By the mid-60's, the
PTO forage blower became the location to find it.
Better to stay with the 44's, lots of parts, the
best MH's. Choice:44 RC Specials, S/N 55113 & up. Avoid 55/555 Gassers. Good luck.

great... thanks for the info! so diesel just does better to keep the crank going than gas does in pulling... yes i noticed those mh 55 and 555 are pretty hard to find and not very many around at all... yes mh 44's are everywhere i have 3 of them, 2 rc and one wide high arch front...i was kinda of surprised to see this serial number on my wide front.. it was mh 44-6 but it has 4 cylinder on it.. not real happy about that but its great tractor to have.... just wondering how diffcult is to deal mh 44 diesel h260? easy to adjust the diesel pump and stuff like that? i have a question, i have 18.4x38 tires mounted on my wide front, the good one...and brand new 45hp 6 ft brush hog... the feild, grass were so thick and bushy, about 3 to 5 feet tall.. didnt have time to cut the feild all this year until recently did it... the weather was pretty hot, around 95 degrees, that mh 44 did not have thermostat in it, for about an hour or so.. i was running at 200 degrees so i stopped and idle the engine down to let it cool off and once it was down at 140 degrees, went back out the feild cutting, it was doing the same thing all over again... is that normal thing to see that? i was going up hill and down hill its pretty rough.. not flat at all... i checked everything, its in top notch i would say... maybe im just working on this mh 44 too hard? fresh oil, fresh synthenic gear oil, fresh anti-freeze, new spark plugs all done before i started cut the field... thanks for the info

thanks shannon
