1963 MF65 PTO problems

Several months back I started having trouble engaging the live pto on my Model 65 tractor. It got to where it would not engage while the tractor was running so I would usually engage it just as the engine was coming to a stop after shutting it off. Then I would start it with the pto engaged which created additional drag on the battery. Some time later I could not engage it at all. You could feel the gears trying to mesh but they just would not engage. Someone suggested I adjust my clutch which I did and that did not help. Most of the summer I have resigned to mowing with the ground pto which is a pain since the blade does not turn at higher rpm's. Now the ground pto will no longer engage. You can feel the gears trying to mesh but no full engagement. Does this sound like something that can be fixed by adjusting something or would one expect to find the ends of the gears just simply worn off? I do not have any manuals just yet and would like to fix this myself if it does not get too complicated like splitting the tractor and rebuilding the clutch or transmission. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I was having the same problem with my MF 65 until I read another posting on this forum. Refer to "Correct Hydro/Transmission Oil for FE 35". I drained out half of my transmission oil and then replaced it with 2 gallons of diesel fuel. I ran the tractor up and down the drive way, raised and lowered my hitch, and then went to engage my pto and it worked. After letting the tractor run for about 10 minutes I drained out the mixture of fuel and oil from my transmission and filled it up with new 90 weight. My PTO now engages correctly when the tractor is running.

I hope someone answers because I have the same question. I can still engage engine PTO by forcing it to engage. The gears grind when engaging.

same prob. here with 1961 MF 65 diesel. sometimes if I slowly let up on the pedal I can find a "sweet spot" & it glides right in. Sometimes not. I never know whether I'm gonna get it in easy or rough.
