I have a 1958 MF50. I would like to run a hydraulic line to work the chute on a 3pt snow blower and still be able to use the 3pt. The trany cover has three holes, one on either side of the cover and one(smaller) on the hydraulic cover plate. Which one should be used to operate a remote cylinder and do I need anything else to maintain use of the 3pt?

Thanks in advance.

Dear Farmer John
Sorry, you just cant do this. On those tractors you have only one hydraulic pump ( multi power tractors have 2) and not enough pump capacity to run both 3pt and remotes/ externals. Best you can do is look for a diverter valve which allows you to select between 3pt and externals as required. So you start blowing and when you want to lift you select 3pt. It fits on the top of the transmission cover in front of the seat to the right side and is a very simple piece of gear worth about $50 second hand. You can al;so but control valves with a selector built in. Cheers Rick ( Canberra, Australia.)

Rick in Canberra. Can you describe this diverter valve setup and connections. I have an MF85 with 3 point hitch. I added a loader and am using the factory auxiliary hydraulic controls. The loader operation is slow but also is "jerky". This may be caused by the hydraulic pump having to serve both the loader operation and 3 point hitch. Appreciate any help. Greetings from the other side of the planet. I could send digital photos of my hydraulic set up if you like.

Dear perky With factory hydraulic controls and presumably a multipower pump on the 85 you dont need a diverter valve. It will be jerky if you try to use both 3pt and hydraulics because you simply run out of oil without a reservoir to boost capacity. You can solve that one with a tak off a harvester ( say an old case or IH ) mounted on the mudguard and feeding directly into the top of the transmission. To solve the slow problem you need to bring the draft control lever right to the top of the quadrant That effectively cuts out the 3pt draft so you can use either 3pt position control or the loader but not both simultaneously. If you have multi power there should be a way to tap into the multipower pump for the loader and leave the 3pt free. That is the case on the 178 tractor I owned.
