In that discussion about pto. speeds some of the people seemed to believe that 540 or 1000 r's meant engine r's. This is not what I believe, 540 or 1000 was explained to me, as the speed at which your pto shaft turned at optimum engine speed for proper power. For instance, 1800 r's is the optimum engine speed for my diesel, at this point the pto shaft will turn at 540 or 1000 rpm.(whichever is engaged).

Most all of the tractors made before the mid 60's only had a 540 RPM PTO. The 100 rpm option is mainly on larger HP tractors. As for the ground speed PTO I beleive this is a carry-over from Harry Fergusons English roots. I liked it when running a pto 3-point Ford side delivery rake. As for comments about full bore when mowing or bushhoging. As a mechanic I get to fix a lot of bent machinery for people $$$. So set that baby where it runs the best. Remember we are working with old iron.

That is the way I understand it also. My MF35 operators manual says the PTO speed is 18/50 of engine speed. That equates to 1500/540. Mine is a Perkins diesel, but I doubt that this varies between diesel/gas models. C. T.

I forgot to ask, what make/model tractor are you referring to? My only PTO options are "ground" or "engine" controlled. Ground is controlled by the physical movement of the tractor (depending on gear/hi-lo settings), and engine is based on the rpm of the engine, regardless of the tractor movement (still based on my previous post about 18/50 ration). I was refering to engine speed. My 165 fergy gas has the ground speed option along with the engine speed option. My Case and Chalmers tractors only have engine speed.

On all Masseys that I have seen and used the tachometer has an engine RPM marked clearly that equates to 540/1000 PTO RPM when you engage the PTO lever to run off the engine versus the groundspeed.

As Weedknocker says..the Tacho was marked with PTO RPM at the revs that were correct for that particular model of engine and tractor. Ground speed was from the UK produced tractors initially and I think was used until the 1980's, some like it some dont use it.
