Hello all great and mighty!!!! I have read a lot of posts and searched the arcives, but have not found a clear answer to the following....
It seems like my 1958 MF65 has some sort of slippage. I noticed this as I was moving the tractor to the work shed. I can't get back on the tractor right now because the carb is being worked on,,, but I can say that the idle would not run the engine slow.... So what I noticed was some sort of clutch? slippage I think.... I could press the clutch in fine, select my gear OK but it would not move until I slowed the idle down to near stalling, then it would catch... At first it happened in third gear. I started off last morning with the tractor about a 1000 feet from where I had to move it to, started it up, let it warm up for a few minutes, selected third, cruised with it for about 500 feet, then the engine rev'ed and I lost ground power(or wheel power or whatever)... I pressed the cluch, slowed the rpms, and selected a lower gear.... By the time I got to my work area, I was in first gear, riding the throttle for catch'age while in first gear... If the idle is slow, it will "catch" and the tractor will move.... Just before this though, the tractor ran well, and always had enough power to spin the wheels... It just needed a carb adjustment....What do you think it could be???
Thank you for your time
ROGER

From what you say I think your clutch plate is down to the rivets and its trying to drive metal to metal, when you drop a gear you are lightening the load so it will drive. If I were you I wouldnt carry on using it as you will be causing more damage by doing that, it will wear the clutch assy face plate or the flywheel or both. The only thing you can do is check that the pedal has free play in it, it should have at least 3/8" if it is less there is danger of slip through that as it is not allowing full pressure from the clutch springs to grip the clutch plate. Another thing which lots of drivers do is ride with their foot on the clutch pedal DO NOT DO THAT. Best of luck with it....John

Sounds like your clutch is slipping. Hopefully all you need is a bit of adjustment. Buy some MF parts, service and owners manuals in addition to the IT manual and Big Dean's CD.
