Still manufacturing oil

The oil level is growing on my dipstick. We're talking 135 perkins deisel here. It went up about 3/16 of an inch in about an hours running time yesterday. I've already replaced the lift pump, and replaced the front seal in the injector pump. There was no movement in the injector pump shaft and the old seal didn't look bad, but I replaced it anyway while I had it off.

I think its gotta be fuel, cause its not milky like water would be.

Any ideas where I can look next? Could it be a bad lift pump out of the box? I'm stumped as to where to go from here. Changing the oil every 5 or 6 hours running time will get very expensive! ;-)

An injector wouldnt cause all that in such a short time and you would notice bad running and smoke. they only inject a feww cc's each time so it would take an awful long time to raise the sump level like you say.I think that it is more likely the front seal on the injection pump as someone has already said you need to lube the seal so it doesnt turn the seal lip back when you fit it. To check if it is the lift pump, leave the pipes connected and just pump the cam lever by hand, if it is leaking like you say you will get some sign by doing that of a possible leakage. Regards...John

Is the power steering pump belt driven or driven by a direct drive off the timing gears? If it is driven by the timing gears it may be leaking past the seal into the engine base. Check the power steering fluid level?

Good thinking Doc, but she's manual steering.

Well, don't point the finger at a nozzle. A nozzle can only allow the amount of fuel that is pushed by the charge for that one cylinder. If the nozzle is weak, it will open too soon and you'll have like an over advanced condition on that one cylinder. It might be heard as a pre-ignition detonation (knock or ping) or seen as a black puff of exhaust everytime that cylinder fires. You didn't mention whether it had a CAV or Simms pump. Sometimes those cupped seals will invert on the shaft as you slide the pump back in place. They need to be really slippery with grease during installation. Also, you didn't mention whether your before and after readings were taken with the engine at the same temperature. If your before reading was taken on a cold engine, and your after reading was taken right after operating for an hour, 3/16 is about normal for expansion of the oil due to temperature change. Finally, it's sad but true that it could have been a bad lift pump out of the box. I'd operate it a couple more times and read the dipstick cold before/ cold after on one trial. Then operate it for ten minutes, shut it down and take a reading, start it up and operate for thirty minutes and read it again. You might not have the problem you think you have. Good luck, drive Massey, Jim

If its not the lift pump and its not the injection pump seal, then doesnt it almost have to be a bad injector? A bad nozzle or needle will let too much fuel out and wash down a cylinder wall and into the oil. Let us know what you find. David

I've thought about this David, but other than being wore out with a lot of hours, she runs pretty good. Smokes pretty good under load, but cranks and runs good.

If it was an injector problem, I feel like it would affect the running.

We'll see how she does after I run the bush hog a few hours monday.
Thanks

Thanks for the info. I did compare hot to cold readings, but I've done it twice, and it grew by the 3/16 inch both times. What I mean to say is the level didn't go down between testings, when it was cold.

You may have hit on something with the installation though. I wasn't smart enough to grease the shaft when I reinstalled.

I'll work it some Monday if the weather permits, and we'll see where it goes from there.

Thanks,
Sam
