Is there a listing of MH engine serial numbers?
My tractor has a number 39164 on it. It is in a 444G but I wonder if the engine is an older engine from a 44?

On the 444 engine the 277 and serial number for the engine is on the front right corner at the top of the block, quite a large area with a lot of room for the markings. On the old 44 there is a much smaller area and at the rear of the block.
Also the 44 has 260 cast on the block on the right side just above the pan. I have saw a lot of 44 Specials with this cast 260 number have the 60 ground off and 77 stamped there.

It would then appear that the motor has been swapped for an older 44 model. Can the part numbers on the head and manifold be checked for year also? Perhaps the engine has been upgraded to 4" bore. I will have to drop the oil pan to find out I suppose. Thanks for the Email.

Doubtful. Remember the LPG's in the Specials were
HG260's, as the final year of production began in 1955. HG277's in Specials originated with S/N 1001
By January 1955, the HG277 S/N's were at about
8900. MH was easily able to build 3000plus before
starting on Triples. Your 444 should have the upgraded head, for higher tollerance compression. Unless damaged, older is unlikely.

Sorry. I neglected to specify that the tractor and engine in question in my message is a gasoline model. I do have a 444LP but that engine is definitley stamped as a 277. But the engine in the 444 gasoline is marked 260 in both areas that is why I was questioning it.

Thanks for the reply.

Some parts may have been replaced on an HG277, with HG260 'used' bolt-ons, the exhaust manifold,
several numbered parts. Do you have the narrow
fan belt? Engine running at 1500 RPM's? You could
drop the pan, check to see if the center bearing
is the flanged style.Possible non-MH replacement
Continental, if the oil pump is in the bottom of the crankcase. MH would be under the front main bearing. Also, non-MH had camshaft bearing inserts
MH were bored into the block, no inserts. 260's &
277's were marketed as power units, in the '60's.
What is the S/N of the 444?

The tractor serial number for the 444G is 72031. That should make it a '56 model. It has the wide fan belt like my 44Gas.
The engine serial number info (in the 444G) is MHA260G 39164

My '56 model 444LP engine info is, MHA277P 9621 (much smaller number than the motor in the 444gas. Which makes me think it is an early 44 engine.)

I have another 44Gas that is engine number,
MHL260G 70494.

Thanks again for the help.

Perhaps the block was cracked on the 444G, so a
260 was bored to 4", used for replacement. You
may have all internal 277 parts, but we don't know. Engine running at 1500 RPM's may mean one
more answer. How much do you want for more tasks?
The flanged center crank bearing would define it.
If this continues, you posts will get answered.
Good luck.

A cracked block is the most likely answer. I will determine if it has been uograded to 4" bore after I am back on my feet. (Broke my back recently. So I've been on the net a lot lately!)
The RPM of the engine may not help since the fellow had used it at a couple tractor pulls and it sounds to be running over 1500 by a LOT! heh heh

More tasks?

The serial number would indicate an early model but I won't know until I can back out in the shop.

Thanks guys. Great site.
