HELP!

I recently purchased a MF 135 with a Continental Z145 gas engine. It ran fairly well for a while.

The oil pressaure reads 18 to 19 and increases 20 at higher RPMs. Is that okay?

The transmission oil is milky yellow. Should it be changed? What oil should I use?

The starter solenoid engages the starter for only a short time before it starts spinning. The battery is strong and the connections are good. Do you have any suggestions for lengthening the time that the solenoid engages the starter?

The PTO arms seem to lift okay and hold the same position but this occurs only when a sliding lever on the right side of the seat is in the full upright position. Is that the way it is supposed to work?

Im not sure what the draft lever is supposed to do.

Now, the electrical system is completely dead. Nothing happens when the ignition switched is turned on. The solenoid, starter, lights, and gauges dont work. The ignition key will start the engine and the gauges will work (except maybe the amp meter) only when I connect a jumper wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the battery terminal on the ignition switch (the switch cannot turn off the engine).

Thanks.

John (a true novice)

Oil pressure sounds a bit low, but an oil and filter change may cure that. Change the transmission oil as you have water in it and change the rubber boots on the gear levers, that is usually where the water gets in. The starter sounds as though the pinion could be worn and is throwing out rather than keeping in mesh with flywheel gear, remove the starter and check the pinion gear for wear. The PTO arm, I think you mean the 3point linkage arms, well the main lever is the position control lever with the round knob on it, the other one (the draft control)should be at the bottom of the quadrant unless you are using depth controlled implements in the ground. I have a sheet with the correct instructions on how to operate this hydraulic system if you would like a copy, send me an email address and I will send it to you. Your electrical problem, try the battery terminals that they are clean and tight, and the main wire from the solenoid main terminal to the rest of the electrics that that is clean and tight, this is on the same solenoid terminal as the main lead from the battery, this could also have some bearing on the problem you told us about with the starter.

- The oil pressure is lower than I'd like it to be, if it were my tractor. How many hours show on the meter? It may be normal wear on a high use engine, or it could indicate an impending bearing or oil pump failure.
- The hydraulic fluid is that color because of water mixing in with it . It's important to maintain the integrity of the watertight boots on the shift and range levers. Rain runs right down them into the tran. cavity. Use only oil designed for BOTH transmission and hydraulic systems (HYTRANS or similar name). Also change the filter.
- The PTO (power take off)doesn't have arms, it is a shaft that comes out of the rear of the tractor and powers equipment like balers, mowers, combines, etc.
- The starter switch must be powered from the battery, Usually a wire runs from the solenoid battery terminal to the starter switch, but it's OK to take the lead direct from the battery.
- If the switch does not turn the engine off, it indicates maybe some burned out diodes in the charging system. The choke will shut the engine down, but turn thr key off also.
- The Massey Fergusons are good tractors, but this one seems to have been neglected for awhile. Hope you didn't pay too much for it , because it sounds like you'll be needing to put some more money into it soon. Use Big Dean's website and get the manuals. Best advice anyone can give you. What's not in the manuals is in Big Dean,s head. Good luck, Jim

JOHN, I TOO AGREE, YOU HAVE A GOOD UTILITY TRACTOR THERE.THE SPEED AND RANGE LEVERS MUST BE IN NEUTRAL TO START,ALSO,CHECK THE WIRE THAT GOES INTO YOUR OIL PRESSURE SWITCH,IT CAN COME OUT AND
IT WILL NOT,START,BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!GET THE FACTORY,NOT REPRODUCTION SERVICE MANUALS.YES,YES,
GO TO BIG DEANS WEB SITE AND ALSO BUY HIS CD FOR THE 135.GOOD LUCK.

Where to start.....

First, you have a great tractor!

You need a set of parts, service and owners manuals.

I would think that the O.P. would go slightly with an increase in RPM's.

Can't help you on the solenoid.

The right most lever is draft. Unless using a plow, etc, it should be in the down position. The inner most lever is position control - that is the one to use.

The ignition switch could be anything. Try first putting the tractor in neutral - both speed and range levers.

You should change the oil. I use Massey M1103.

Best advice I can offer: Visit Big Dean's web site, buy his CD, buy the manuals and spend a lot of hours searching this forum.

Bill
