since i have the motor and clutch out i am going to replace that leaking seal in the front trannsmition case. i have the gear off the shaft, but want to know what to expect when i take off the cover. also does the new seal just slide in? or will i have to rip the transmition apart to replace it? i have also desided that i may as well replace the clutch too, the old one is not bad and works good still. but ifeel that i may as well replace since i have the tractor this far apart.what should i replace? just the clutch pad? should i get a clutch kit and replace the whole thing?even if i was not to replace any of the clutch i will replace the bearings. what other items might i want to consider to replace right now since i have the tractor this far apart?
any words of advice or tricks to make things go as smooth as glass?

don,t worry about clutch as all you have to do later is disconnect u joint and raise motor pull hogshead and clutch not a very hard job with chain hoist also on that croove on trans shaft they do make jiffy collars which is a very thin like bushing but think jb will work as no speed good luck

Steven, I dont know which type of connector you have but My 49' had the chain style and later they replaced that with a rubber type connector. Either way after you get that off the input shaft theres a cover with three bolts that comes off and has the seal in it. My shaft had a grove wore in it, so I took some JB Weld filled and sanded to back smooth and that seems to be working good. For the clutch I just sent my disk away and had it resurfaced, because the pressure plate was good and I just re greased the throwout bearing. Now for the bad news, the bearings are hard to get, I had to have my local napa store order them and if I remember right the large rear one was over $60. The best thing to make sure you do on reassembly is to clean clean clean all surfaces and you shouldn't have any trouble.

The seal comes off with the plate this is all you have to take off. There will be a bearing directly behind it though, so after you take the seal plate off make sure not to put it in gear. My dad did this while I was working and it pushed the bearing out, not much fun to get it lined back up.
