I looked at a 1970 MF20 with a 3 cyl gas Perkins. At the tail pipe the engine sounded like it was missing. It sounded fine at the front end and pulled well under load. The owner said the "missing" sound was characteristic of the 3 cyl gas engine. This is what a mechanic had told him. He is asking $3500 which is not bad if the engine is sound. Does anyone have this engine and does it sound different from a 4 cyl?

John

Remember what a 2 cyl John Deere sounds like? Well the 3 cyl Perkins won't sound quite as bad. Check the compression to see if all 3 cyls. are close to each other's reading. It could have a burned or sticking valve. If the compression checks out OK, it's probably nothing big. Perkins makes a good engine and Ferguson made great little tractors. Good luck, Jim

I have the same tractor and they do sound different than a 4cyl (not as smooth running).
They are also verey tempermental, every thing has to be just right, timming, pointgap, plug gap,
I even had to replace plug wires with solid core
wires ,after all that it is a verey strong little
tractor.
