can anyone tell me how to adjusting this valves proper way? i was just cleaning my ole mh 44 up getting ready to pull.. took the valve cover off.. i notice the tappets and spacer? im not sure whats called but looks like a thick washer between the tappets and valve springs.. i noticed the tappets were kinda of pretty loose like a gap between the tappets and valves.. the washer or spacer between the tappets and valves, its almost like spacers or washers can fall out so what i did was i loosen the nuts on the tappets and took my screw driver and put some more turns until there was no gaps at all between the tappets and valves but you still can turn the spacers or washer around easily but no gaps at all.. is this how u do this proper way? i turned the crank until valves are competely closed then see how much gap there is then i adjusted the bolt screw with nuts on top of the tappets until theres no gap at all or very little.. any advices greatly appricate it! i dont know how it is supposed to be done... thanks much! shannon

Shannon, the spacers you are referring to are called roto caps, kinda a invention that shows how far continental was ahead of other engine builders. Off the land is right about the .014 settings when hot. I ended up going .012 on the intakes and .014 on the exhaust befor they were right, but my head is planed .100 so that might make a difference. I had to do mine while it was running before I finally fot them right. Have fun, out of all the tune up things I hate this the most.

so i should let it run hot then turn off and make the adjustments on the valves? they were kinda of pretty waay loose i would say around more than .040 gap... so im going to try set them all exactly what u said... .012 for intake and .014 for exhaust.. where should i exactly put the gauge between at? between the roto caps to the rockers or valves? i dont think this head has been worked on yet. appricate all those info u gave to me.. thanks again.. shannon

Go between the bottom of the roto cap and the valve stem. Measureing at the roto cap rocker arm will do you no good, and since these are dished on that side it will ruin your feeler gauge as well.

you have to have valves closed and then have a gap I think .017 or 019 but not sure . will be close tho. you can usually check 3-4 at a time but don,t hurry and make sure closed. If you run the way you adjusted you will burn the valves . you might be smart asking a friend to help you the first time as you don,t want to ruin motor that is running. specs might be in tuneup guide at left

Shannon, on the H260, the valve tappet clearance should be .014(hot setting). To adjust, turn the
adjusting screw on the rocker arm, in or out, for
proper setting. Also, since you are onto the rocker arms, check your valve springs, to see if they are all assembled correctly. They should be progressively wound, tight coil end against the head. Good luck.
