I have a TO 35 Standard diesel engine. It has two replaceable fuel filters. How do I replace these filters. There is one bolt in the bottom of each cannister, but they seem only to act as drain plugs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Kirk,
I was after the same info for my FE35 and Jack in NB (see page 11) supplied me with this info(Thanks Jack!). Of course I'm assuming the TO 35 and FE 35 have the same engine??(Any suggestions Jack?). Hope it helps.
Those units are your fuel filters, and by all means, change them. Dirt or water getting through those filters lead to the most expensive problems you can face with a diesel, short of actually blowing up the engine!

Both are replaceable cartridges, not cleanable.

The front cartridge (primary, wider can) is about 2 1/4" high, 3 7/16 d, with a 3/4 +/- hole. MF 1 012 006 M1 or M2, CAV 7111/44, Wix 33114, Perkins 31944, Fram C11838PL.

Secondary cart is about 3 1/2 h, 2 3/4 d, 1 5/16 hole. MF 1 850 450 M1 or M2, Wix 33194, Perkins 32543 or 32327, Purolator P99162B, AC FF23 or Fram C11816PL.

Thanks Craig and Rod for your response. But my question remains: How do I change these filters? Physically, what do I have to loosen or remove to get to the filters. The bolts at the bottem of the cannisters containing the filters seem only to be drain plugs. Do I remove one or a number of the bolts on top of the filter cannister receivers? Do these metal cannisters spin off? I tried turning them off. They seem awful snug. Thanks.

Hi Kirk -

Two of the three different styles in my parts book show the retaining nut on the top center of the mounting casting.

These thread down onto retaining bolts coming up from the bottom center of the filter cans.

The fatter (primary) filter may have a bleed-off connection on the top of the filter retaining nut, which would have to be removed before loosening the retaining nut. This retaining nut assembly may be drilled, which makes it relatively weak, so don't over-do it when re-tightening.

A light butter of silicone sealant or seal-all, if you have that product, on the copper gaskets before reassembly will reduce leaks.

And pay careful attention to the o-ring alignment when re-assembling. They are usually rectangular section, easy to get twisted, and then leak forever.

Good luck! and I admire both the perseverence in pushing for an answer, and also the TLC you're giving your tractor!

I have changed fuel filters on a IH diesel they just turn off like a car oil filter fill each new filter with clean diesel and reinstall then start tractor and run it for a while to check for leaks it should start right up their may be a priming lever but I have never had to use it. If in doubt get a manual or ask at a tractor shop.

regards
