Hello folks i am looking at buying a 1950 massey 44 rowcrop gas tractor. The older man said he drove and parked the tractor there 15 years ago i went to look at it today and i pulled the starter to get to the flywheel with a bar and it moved about 1/2 inch and then it felt VERY VERY solid it didnt feel like just rusty dry cylinders. I was wondering what you guys thought about it? Should i pull the pan before i buy? Did the have and problems with broken rods or cranks or hyd pump gears? Im not familiar with massey's that much he's asking $300 is that reasonable? If i do need an engine or major parts are they easy to find thank you very very much!!!!! !!!!!

Make sure the tractor is out of gear if you haven't already.

Was it indoors or outdoors? Could there be water/antifreeze solution in one or more cylinders which is stopping it on compression stroke? I would remove the spark plugs as someone else said.
Also, could the clutch be stuck together with rust and that cause it to turn hard, or it is turning the pto and there is some drag or problem there?

I'm not real familiar with the motor on 44 Massey, but here's a thought. If it turns a little bit, then gets solid, that leads me to believe that the pistons are not stuck, but possibly the valves are stuck? Then the push rods won't be able to move the valves up and down. I have had this happen before on other makes of tractors. As far as value, if it is complete I would think it would junk out for considerably more than that if you didn't get it going. Good luck! I paid $400 for my 49, but the guy I bought it from gaurenteed me that it would run, and if it had bad problems i.e. broken crank, ect. either I didn't own it or he would get me the parts. Still $300 isn't bad if its not all beat up, and has potential.

tell you what, if you dont buy it email me at [email protected]
and if that dont wok post your email here and i will get ahold of you that way.
doe the tractor not have a hand crank on the right hand side if you were on the tractor ? if it does you would do better to try moveing it with the hand crank. they are biger motors and when on a compression stroke will stop guys that are not the strongest dead in there tracks.pull the plugs out and move it than. yes you should remove the oil pan, but only if he will let you. if he will not, than you maybe dont want to buy it. busted connecting rods are common in any tractor that was not put back to gether right. but was not a big deal in a massey if put in right. push rods i dont know on. also $300 is fair but it is on the high side i think for a tractor that has sat. hope that helps out and is what you are looming for.
