after tearing down the engine in my 44 the past two days i have taken most every thing off and have a good look at the crank pins and the center main. what i want to know is, how rough before the crank needs to be shaved? i can run a finger across the pins and they are smooth as glass except a center ridge and the same is true for the center main bearing surface on the crank. i have yet to pull the front or rear, just takeing a break from the heat right now. also, when i pull the camshaft out and the crank shaft, what is the best way to get them to aline right? also as a note the fly wheel on the engine has been chewed up realy good by a bad starter and apears to have been rotated a few times. most likely i am going to replace the flywheel, where does it go on the crank to aline with #1 on tdc? thanks

The crank and the cam is timed by marks on the front gears, the two dots on the cam gear will straddle the one dot on the crankshaft gear. The flywheel bolt holes should let the flywheel be bolted to the crankshaft in only the right position. You need to mike the shaft to make sure the bearing are not worn "out of round". and how much they are wore. If you aren't familiar with assembling an engine you may need a mechanic to give some advice about fitting things or some darn good manuals that you can understand.

i have a few motor rebuilds, but never one that i thought that the crank might still be good. i have not checked for eggshape crankpins yet. now that i have the motor out of the tractor i will be able to pull the crank too, that will make it better for me to be able to tell
