i have started in today on riping down the 44 to rebuilt the engine and fix the leaking tranny seal. well i figured that since i was riping out the engine i should rebuild the starter on it too. ever since day one the starter has been a real POS and only works some of the time. it will turn good when it wants to, the rest of the time it makes a grinding sound. what i would like to know is how big of a task is it to rebuild one? what parts get replaces/renewed. what parts get cleaned up and reused. and just how hard is it to rebuilt the starter?

is that starter 12v or 6 volt orginal? if its 12 volt.. u could buy new one at napa.. might be alittle expensive... might be abit easier to buy new one than rebuild the old one. just replace the windings and the ring gear also shaft too.. bushing too.. i dont know if u can find new ring gears..i wonder if u can convert 6 volt starter into 12 volt starter by changing the windings coil in it? i have orginal 6 volt starter with 12 volt system.. seems to be working great.. i have another mh 44 with new 12 volt starter on it.. shannon
