I have a working f40 built in 1956. It is low on hydrolic fluid. Where is the fluid opening to fill the fella up? Do I pour it in the little dip stick opening? As you can see, I know nothing about tractors..... .so far.

Most dealers will sell you a universal hydraulic oil. The older tractors didn't all use this light weight universal oil so check an owners manual or find out what it uses. The tractors of M-F, very near what your tractor is, call for a GL 1 type mineral oil and much heavier weight than newer tractors. Probably take 10 to 12 gal to fill it.

Use 90 wt. gear oil. It take just a shade under 8 gallons to fill completely. If you drain and refill, make sure you drain it completely. There are TWO drain plugs. One is under the transmission, and the other is under the rear end. Drain it completely. Fill it with diesel fuel. (Lower the 3 pt. hitch all the way, and leave it down) start the tractor, and drive it up and down your driveway for a couple minutes. Then drain it again. You'll be amazed at the amount of crud that will come out. Let it drip dry, then re-fill with good, quality, 90 wt. gear oil. Don't let ANYONE talk you into using universal hydraulic oil. It's not the same stuff. I've done this on a number of old Massey's, and it works. The diesel has SOME lubricating qualities, so it won't hurt a thing. Just don't run it with a load, and don't move the 3 pt. hitch from the down position while you are doing all of this. Also, check your oil level with the hitch in the down position. It would take FOREVER to put 8 gallons of 90 wt. oil in through the dipstick hole! Good luck, and happy tractoring, Bill

Indydirfarmer..... more info please! Though you gave me the drain plug ideas, I still do not know where the fluid port is to fill said hydrolic, or 90 wt. gear oil as you mentioned. You probably read that I know nothing of tractors, but I sure do love to ride on this classic.

Thanks for you help. Terry

It's right next to the base of the gearshift lever. It's a round plug, with a 1-1/16" hex head. (Also near the base of the steering) Get shop manuals quick! You need them!

Terry, you REALLY NEED an owners manual. The hydraulic oil goes in right by the shifter(s). There is a hex "cap" that I believe is 1-1/8". Remove it and pour away. You might want to drain all the old stuff, and start over, while you have a chance. No telling how old (and how dirty) the old oil is. Get a manual.
