i see that you are going to pull your 44 this year. what is your set up? and how do you not know what engine you have in that masssey??? if i am right you bought that engine not to long back and droped it in yes? did it come from a 44 or a 44 specail? there is also an id tag on the engine that will say what it is along with stapms on just abought every engine part in it. i see that you have water in the tires, get rid of it!!!! that will kill you at a pull. what is the 44 STd RC HA????

i have 3 mh 44's. only one is in real good shape. brought it like 2 years ago from someone. the guy said he rebuilt that engine about 5 years ago so this is the problem for me i didnt ask him if it was orginal h260 or went to h277 rebuilt kit.. so im not sure if it is 260 or 277.. the good one i have never took anything apart, just needed alot of seals and gaskets , thats it... it has high arch wide front. its a working tractor for cutting feild and paving driveway.. would like to have some fun pulling, i have never done pulling before, not like pulling tree stumps! haha.. i thought water ballast would be more weight more tractions? so it would make my mh 44 underpowered if i do that? really sure appreicate your advices.. need lots of info about antique tractor pulling.. they are having one this end of aug at kaskaskia IL.. also i have 18.4x38, it felt just has enough power to keep it going even with 6 foot brushhog cutting 5 foot grass.. it was working hard but it didnt die on me haha.. so any more info on pulling greatly appricate it! thanks steve for reply.. thanks shannon

first off we will cover the liquied wieght in the tires, it does indeed give you better weight and tractor when plowing and so forth, but it does have a draw back, it A slushes to the back of the tire as speed increeses makeing the tractor have to work harder to pull the tire up. and with it sloshing B means that the wieght is allways moveing from spot to spot. now the tires you have on that tractor are way to big, they rob lots of power. i have on my standard 16x30 but also have cast wheeel senters. you will do well if you get rear wheel wieghts for the rears. i would make wheely bars for it too. if you have a spare drawbar or can get one, cut it shorter and redrill a hole that is closer to the rear end, it will help to wiegh down the rear when pulling hard. also if you are not runing tubes i would do so. after that drop the air prearsure abought 4psi. as far as your motor is concerd it is a cont 260. it might have a biger bore, but it still is the 260. unless it was pulled out of a specal or a 444. the 44 will have all the power you need if you have it wieghted right. or you can sink fast and power out if you dont. also though this will not help to much, run senthectic motor oil, it will give you a few extra horse and will when luging hard will make it just a bit easer. note do not use regual auto senthetic it is not built for tractors and will ruin the engine. any further questions feel free to ask. if i dont have an anwser i can send you some whear that will.

cool! this is helping making sense to me! i have 2 wheel weights i think they are 100 pounds each.. thats alread on it but no water ballast in those big tires yet... i called that office about that pulling show.. they said all i needed is drawbar that is under 20 inches from ground and 18 inches from rear axle.. and it has to be under year 1953 so mine is '49 i ll be in antique class maybe in 5500 pound class.. 4 psi!? that really low??? i have mine at 20 psi.. the thing is i have 15x38 rims with 18.4x38 tires.. probably will have to go down to like 12 psi and also i have to drive like 4 miles to that tractor pulling show.. my trailer isnt strong enough to hual it.. i learned a lesson almost ruined the trailer haha tires were smoking.. tell me what you think with all those i have on my massy, think it ll do ok in pulling? thanks steve all those info.. hey im not sure if 33 , 44 and 55 has exactly same carb? i have 2 of them it felt alittle different alittle less power so i gotta put the old one back on... thanks shannon

No the carbs on the 33,44,55 are not the same. if you were to bolt on either carb to a 44 you would be looseing power. there is no bolt on hp. the 55 runs somewhere around 382cid and almost 60 horses i know that tthe 555 runs the same motor but runs over 60 hp on the belt and draw bar. ok you also do not want to run 4psi in the tires. i said to remove abought that so if you are at 20 take is to 18 and see how she handles is, if you get no deforemation when you let is out, drop to 16psi and if you just get a slight belling out on the losser tracks it will hold good. and with the rain that has been absent up here in wisconsin there are lots of loose trackes. also for the first time runer, when the front end pickes up, let her go. you will be fine just let the tractor do its job. i would say that you will haveto work on what you have, that ever you did with the one carb that you need to change back to the other one. also with the 3 44s sitting around would you happen to have parts for the 260 engine you would be willing to sell? as i am in need of a few.

oh yes.. i misunderstood yeah that sounds about right i think i ll let it go around 18 psi hopefully she wont let it slip too much.. i have watching some pulling so i get that idea ha... i think i better put the orginal carb back on her.. it felt alittle different i suspect it probably came from 33.. wish i could give u parts but i sure do need those parts of both of them one is alright but smokes alot other has no compression.. so i have to take 2 motors and fix them up into one good motor.. those rebuild kit prices are crazy.. so its alot cheaper to buy mh's than buying rebuild kit.. tell me what you need and i ll see what i can do .. seems theres enough mh 44's around here.. i have them bring mh 44's to my home.. seems not to be too hard to find them.. i think illnois has alot of mh 44's i noticed that.. i saw 2 mh 44's diesels on ebay for sale , near ks city.. but the guy didnt want deal with me cuz i wanted some this and that and we couldnt agree on that deal.. those mh 44d were only good for parts.. had almost everything on it it was row.. so you should see them come up once awhile.. ebay is a really good site to find parts once awhile.. so let me know what you need i might find it in no time..

im in same boat as you are... hard to find.. just curious where did you get the rings at? how much did u pay for them? are u using orginal h260 or h277?? crankshaft is probably going to be abit hard to find.. they dont make them anymore...im not sure if diesel and gas crankshaft on mh 44's are same?? if they are i think theres a website i can send to you and you can take care the rest of it..but its diesel crankshaft i think it is same??

shannon i have not bought the rings yet, but when i do i will be going to napa to get them other wise i am going to have to go to a continental dealer that is abought 35 miles south of here. as for the diesel crank and the gas crank after looking in my book i see no meantion of any difference. i am useing the origanal 260 crank in it. the 277 was not made till 1954 and all my tractors are older than that. a 260 can not under any curcumstances be called a 277. you can get a 4 inch bore for a 260 that would make it the same cubes and all as the 277. but the motor still remanes the same. it is like when you over bore a 350 chevy .007 you dont call it a 400 big block it is a chevy 350 with .007 over bore.

yes thats right... so the engine h277 has different crankshaft right? what about the bore sleeve?? same as h277 for h260? over 4 inches both 277 and 260? but different crankshaft? means different roller cam too? also different distrubor too?i dont have book that tells me what parts are the same and whats not..i only had mh 44 for 3 years so this s a first one i ever owned.. its something thats nice to have one very cheap and very easy to work on but parts are a bit hard to find which is why i have 2 more of them and planning to buy a few more then thats it... thats where i got all gaskets from napa store too.. i ll ask and see if they got rings too and bearings too..

no the crank in the 270 is the same as the 260. every thing but the bore the years made and the stampings are different. the 260's bore is 3.875-3.877 the 277 is a 4.00-4.002 inchsnow you can put up to 41/4 inch sleeves into either engine without and boreing modifications or any type of work realy. just resleeveing. you will see that early speacas (1954) and maybe a little latter too with have parts that are stamped on it 260. they were leftover parts from when they done way with the 260, end of (1953) it was the end of the 44 too. (1954 was the start of the 44 special. every part that is in a 260 will fit in a 277 and vice-versa hope this in not to confusing here.

Hey Steven, some of your numbers looked good, some
are adding confusion for Shannon. First Specials,
'54? Skip over to a MH site, pull up the Nebraska
Tests #510, 10 October '52, an H277 44 Special
Standard gave the lone unimpressive evaluation for
all Specials,no RC's,or D's. For '53, both models,
40K & Special, competed for the same buyer, sales
were hurt. Goodbye, 40K. The crankshaft changed on the 277 with engine #25200 & up. This crank used a flanged center main bearing. The HD260 crank is hardened more than a H260,interchange:yes
Your '54 book is second edition. Keep at it,Guy.

so gas h260 and diesel h260 are the same but diesel has harden crankshaft than gas crankshaft for better strength.. but u can interchange those crankshaft right? thats what i thought because they sure look exactly the same but diesel are harden than gas ones.. i bet theres only difference between gas and diesel is the piston compressions.. but most can be interchanged i bet... but heads are differnt.. thats all.. thats what i found 2 mh 44d's near kc area... the guy is trying to get rid of it real cheap... they would be great donor tractors to have... glad us massy lovers have u "off the land".. hey, off the land.. how did you know all about this?? u mechanic?? nice having your advices and helping out... thanks shannon

Kind words are appreciated, but more important is
getting the facts, correct. '52-'57 saw incredible
MH RC tractors, 40-52 HP. If done well, you have
found the best tractor to rebuild, work, enjoy. The
guys who taught me the most, have passed on. What
can YOU do, now? Stay loyal to the correct red, in
that HP range. Avoid 55's, power-yes;features-no.
Notice parked MH's, great to grab a stuck 260, for
budget crank & bearings, when intact in rusty 44.
Haul a few home, build one from three, marginal
parts outlay.A lot bolts up well. Good luck.
