I have been looking for an older tractor, and thought I wanted an older Ford, an 8N or NAA, or possibly something a little newer. Then I ran in to a fellow not far from our new farm property that specializes in, and obviously loves, Massey Ferguson's.

I looked at a few that he had outside that he said he would be running through his shop. He invited me in to see the current one in the shop. It was a 1957 Model 35. Then engine was still out, but it was the most beautiful tractor I'd ever seen. It was nicer than what I'd seen in shows and at the fair. It had been completely stripped down to bare metal everywhere and repainted. The seat was new, with new upholstery, new lights, new exhaust, new battery, new starter, new guages, the list goes on and on. It also has brand new front and rear tires and wheels. A body man straightened out and painted all of the body work and it looks better than it must have new. It has a live PTO, two stage clutch, and power steering. I saw pictures of the entire tractor dissasembled, and he says that everything that needed to be replaced was replaced. He has resleeved the engine and is completely rebuilding it and will have it in next week some time.

With no implements, I paid $4,500 for the tractor. Giving the condition of the tractor, and the rebuilding that's been done, and all of the new parts and tires it seemed like an extremely fair deal? Am I right?

I'd say you did better than most people buying tractors. The MF 35 is a tough little machine that will do almost anything you ask of it. Harry Ferguson was a heck of a good engineer and his old tractors are still proving it today. I pulled a 35 out of the weeds at a friend's ranch about a year ago. He said it quit running two years earlier. In two days time it was purring just like a 4 cyl. tractor should. After some fluid and filter changes, the hydraulics and power steering were working again. It's earning its keep again with no problems. Enjoy

Thanks Jim! I thought it seemed like a mightly fair deal. I was hoping my excitement didn't lead me to pay a bit too much though.

What really cinched it was the guy that I bought it from. He was easy going and obviously really knew his tractors. Since this is my first tractor I thought it would be nice having someone close by that was a parts and information source.

Now I need to figure out the best implement to use to clear a fair amount of sage brush. The soil is a perfect sandy loam, it digs very easily and the sage brush is mostly 2" or less at the base and can be pulled or dug out quite easily.

What do you think for getting rid of it? I think maybe a good 7' back blade would do the trick, but maybe a chisle toothed type of cultivator might dig it out a bit better? We have about 20 acres to clear, fairly devoid of rocks. Any advice would be really appreciated.

I'd get a set of soil rippers to mount on the 3 point hitch. That's probably not the correct name, but close enough. You see big ones mounted on the back of CAT dozers. An even more useful implement would be a rear mounted box blade/scraper with the rippers (moveable up or down) attached. Jim
