i brought home my new engine a few days ago and started to tear into it today now that it is in the space i had made for it. well all was looking good for the most part till i removed the front cover and inspected the crank shaft gear closely. the gear on the crank has a bolt broke off in the one hole, someone must have tryed to pull it at one time. and the gear has been beat up with what looks to be a hammer. also the back of the gear showes sings that it was chewed up and chewed up another gear. the only problem is that the other two gears look fine. i figure that since this motors coverner was taken of and put on a different tractor that the gear was off a different tractor. i have two opoins with this gear, one i can take it in and clean it up and rework the gear till it is nice and smooth on the teeth or two i can find a used one. i am leaning tward replaceing it with a different one. also when i pulled the center main bairing there is a bit of surface rust on the crank from haveing sat all these years the rust does not come in contact with the bearing at all, it is along the side where the bearing was not. i am going to pull all the conecting caps to inspect the bearings there. but i am not sure on the front and back mains. if i pull the rear main bearing, will the seal come out and need to be replaced? will it need to be refited? or am i able to pull the rear main and inspect it than replace the bearing cap? also is there shims on the front main bearing that i will have to worry abought?or can that one be pulled and inspected the same as the center with the excepton of the oil pump being on the front main? thank you i know that the questions are a tab tib novice here, but am wanting to make sure that i do every thing right. first continetal that i am tearing into here.

haveing remover the crank shaft i i have inspected the one damaged bearing area on the crank. it has been wore to an egg shape kind of, but only one side is woren down. i need to measure the wear spot, but i know that is is deep,1/8 inch maybe. also one shim on the crank shaft had been toren, does that matter? i have also been able to look into where the cam shaft is and see that TWO lifters have been robbed from the engine, all pushrods are there and will be checked to see if they are true, the rockers loof good from what i see. and the springs also, i see lots of orangeish red paint on them like what is in the block. i have deisided that i have to remove the head to make sure that all is well in there. there is some surface rust in one sleeve that i can see. i realy found my self a winner for the money huh folks. oh well

well i have taken all the main bearing caps off from the engine, looks good under there so that is a plus. i see that the rear main seal looks newer in the block, that is a plus too. the top seal holder is gone!!! that is - i have also taken out the blots on the last two conecting rod caps. four has come off with no prolem and looks good. one, will not come off the conecting rod and there does not apper to be any bearings in it. that is a big -. what i want to know is if i pull the crank out piston and all, will i be able to put the piston back in from the under side the block??? or would i have to take the head off and go from there?i might just pull the head off any way, but still am hopeing to be able to not have to. i am still hopeing that i can some how keep this simple. lost cause i think! oh well

WEll i have pulled two of the conecting rod caps, and with that have gotten 2 yes 2 different surprizes. one beeni that cylnender #3 has no bottom bearing and two cylender#2 has a ugly looking wear spot on the crank shaft. there is a spot on the crank there where the wear parren expands in both dierctions. i am not sure the reason for that but i am sure that is is not a good thing. also i see that the conectining rods have been removerd a time before, as the rod #'s are 2,1,3,4. and the caps were 3,2,1,4 i am in fear of pulling the last two conecting rod caps. i might have bought a good parts engine maybe i dont know.

Why not remove the valve cover, seen how the head
looks, valves all loose, appear to seat well, rocker
arms intact? Machine shop would give you a quote
on the gear damage, possible crank cut. Once you
cut, you will be sizing replacement bearings, so
weigh that out, if significant cut required, you
may face custom bearings. The rear main seal is
not a major issue, once you have crank/mains'nice'
Brass strip can retain the lower half, so snugger
fit. Unless a Pandora's Box of bolted up scrap, it
may help to grab a stuck 260,pull the lowers to
swap.Anything of the pistons/sleeves? Internal rust? If looking sour, return it to the joker, or
$75.00 down the toilet. Good luck, Steven.

i am going to remover the valve cover, but i am not wanting to remove the head, might any way. what might a regrinding cost have you any clue? the pistons and sleeves look good so far, no clue on the rings i do not see any rust any where but the one center main bearing. and tha is light surface. i am going to pull the cam shaft out tonight and inspect that and i might pull the lifters too. dont know how far i am going to go till i get there i guess. i figure that i have not lost the $75 either way i go from here. i can sell the parts for alot more that $&5, but i also get a good eduaction out of the deal, and that along is worth more than $75 also did you see my post on the hydraulic manifold, as i think you out of most here would most likey be the one to know what i am talking abought there and the parts too. not many have what you have for knowalge here
