Wanting to stick a 327 chevy in a 44 frame. What is the easiest way to adapt this motor? Can I use the stock bellhousing or not? I have some ideas but hoping someone else has done this with some pointers! This seems to be a good site on masseys, and very helpful info for the do it your selfer mechanic. Thanks,JOHN.

The man that built the Massey 81 I have left the 3 speed transmission on and used a u joint to the Massey transmission. It has a 307 does good mowing, I don't want to break driveline as 81 was lot smaller than your 44. Used to see 44 as modified pulling tractors so must be fairly strong. Good Luck

great idea, i must say, after you get done butcering the 44 you will be surpriced the amouont of time you get to use it. most tractors with car engines last a long time, abought one year of good used. have fun you will need lots of replacement part too, the oil pump in the rear will never hold up, you will need to change that all the time too. with out installing a second transmition i figure that the life of that tractor will cut cut in half. you are better leaveing the tractor along. if you are looking for a tractor to make into a hotrod, get a deere

hey -- great idea!! Don't know what the other guys story is but sometimes the factorys build stuff for various reasons, ie. save money, pacify the masses, reliability or whatever. I have made so many rigs so much better over the years. You engineer it, design it, build it and drive the wheels off. However with that said, your question of the bellhousing speaks volumes of your conversion knowledge. Your gonna need a good machinist or a whole lotta dremel bits to use the factory housing. You'll have to build an adapter plate, then build some mounts, find a way get your tranny in the mix. GOOD LUCK....it's been done before... it can be done again. Oh by the way the CJ or Landcruiser SBC conversion is bad...I do mean bad..rippin rock climin, tearing up the ground. It's all gearing, weight transfer, and camshaft. WildmaN

Often wondered why anyone would want to do that. Reminds me of a friend who had a 70's Toyota Landcruiser (Jeep style) and he hauled out the inline 6-cylinder gas engine and dropped a 350 Chevy into it. He was very disappointed ... lots of speed but no torque compared to the original engine. He ruined a very nice Landcruiser in my opinion and in fact, when he went to sell it the marketplace wasn't interested.

You cut to the chase, a year sooner, a fraction of
the price, buying 'last year's project',someone
else had expectations for, but time, money, interest
ran out. The struggle to find a buyer for the 44
'messed-over', is difficult. When you start at square one, most likely you will bow out before
the bugs are out. Hacking up another 44 is the
usual result. Were you a Master Mechanic, it's possible, but a rebuilt stock 44 can be far more
interesting than a freak-on-wheels.
