Last year I had the engine rebuilt on my (gasoline) 1961 MF 35. The guy that rebuilt it put 15W40 oil in it, and that worked. I'm going to change the oil, and I'm not sure what weight to choose. I use it primarily for mowing in the summer and plowing snow in the winter. I'm in central Ohio, so it is rare to go below 0F or above 100F. Opinions on oil? Thanks.

Sounds like everyone agrees that 15W40 is a good (or at least reasonable) way to go. My tractor mechanic agrees with you. I followed your advice. I opted for Pennzoil 15W40. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

In a small gas tractor like that, 10w-30 of any brand is fine. To me, oil is oil, and I buy whatever is cheep. I know I'm probably gonna be attacked by people saying that you should buy the liquid gold instead, but I've never had any problems in my 165 gas. I also have a 285 and 1755 Oliver and run 15w-40 in them, as well as the bigger gas in my 1600 ollie once I get done going through the engine.

Multi-grade diesel oil is what I use in diesel and gas tractor engines. I use only Mobil Delvac 1300 15W40. Other good brands are Shell Rotella T 15W40, Pennzoil 15W40.

Other than Arnold Palmer, no one will do more to promote Pennzoil products than me. I have used them for years, with no engine related problems. I used SAE30 in my diesels and gas engines for years. The best John Deere mechanic I know, has talked me into trying (Pennzoil) 15/40. I have run it for a year now, and can't see any negatives. We ran the 15/40 in our 4440 this spring. The tractor has 4800 hours, without any major overhaul. I decided that it was time. When we tore it down last week, the engine was as clean and free of build-up as any engine that I have ever seen, with the amount of use this one has. We change oil on a regular basis, use GOOD filters, and take care of any smal problems, before they get costly. My point is, I don't know it all, but I think that I am as good as anyone, in taking care of my tractors, and I use the multi-wieght oil. AND, I have a solid record of good service from the Pennzoil. (We even use Pennzoil hydraulic oil) I have a 1957 Massey-Ferguson 50, with 7000+ hours, that has run on SAE30 Pennzoil, for 46 years. My dad bought it new. I have started using the 15/40 in it too. (With good results)
